米国人にとってそれは、遠いアジアで起こった「対岸の火事」でしかなかった。
３月１日、ニューヨークで初めての感染者が確認された時も、
まだニューヨーカーはどこかで、楽観視していたに違いない。
たった４週間、ニューヨークだけで６万人近くが感染し、
米国全土ではすでに12万人超、イタリアを抜いて世界一の数字を記している。
３月７日、国家非常事態宣言の後、娘の学校から面会禁止令が伝えられた。
３月11日の誕生日、17歳の誕生日をどのように過ごしたのだろうか。
会えない辛さ、やるせなさ、無力さ。
そこからは、すべての風景が、色を失っていった。
NY州は、大人数での集まりを禁止し、飲食店の制限を始めたのを皮切りに、
３月16日には公立学校を閉鎖、特定の業種以外の自宅勤務を命じた。
３月22日、不要不急以外の完全なる外出禁止令、いわゆるロックダウン。
周囲には一気に失業者が増えて、街はゴーストタウン化している。
国際展示場として有名なジャビッツセンターに、1000床のベッドが設置され、
セントラル・パークにも、緊急野外病院が作られた。
遺体安置のためのテントを見れば、誰しもが我が身を案じるのは当然で。
「外出自粛」は、「絶対に外に出てはいけない」というお達し。
比較的症状の軽い子供や若者がキャリアとなって、お年寄りの命を奪っている。
自分が感染しない、させないために、責任を持って行動すること以外、
今の私たちにできることがあるのだろうか。
戦地となったこの光景が、いつかまた鮮やかな色を取り戻すように。
