1990年代、乗務員時代に「オフ・ブロードウェイ」という言葉を初めて知った。
ニューヨークのブロードウェイ界隈に建ち並ぶ劇場ではないけれど、
それに準じるマンハッタン内の小さな劇場で公演を開催する。
顔を「青づくし」に塗った「ブルーマン」のコミカルなショーを観ながら、
その舞台に立つことがどれほど凄いことかを、実感した。
セリフのないショーだから、日本から来た友人からのリクエストも多く、
あの頃は何度も劇場に足を運んだ。
2000年に出演した企業コマーシャルが日本でも放映されて、
「ブルーマン」は一躍、世界という舞台で「時の人」となり、
ニューヨークでも、すでに25年以上のロングラン公演が続けられている。
ラスベガスの劇場は、ニューヨークの常設シアターより大きくて、
いかにもエンターテインメント向けに設営されている。
現代風にアレンジされて、プロジェクションマッピング的な要素もあったけれど、
基本となる筋書きは、あの頃とまったく変わっていなかった。
観衆を巻き込む観客参加型のショースタイルも健在で、
遅刻した観客にモニターカメラを向ける小技も同じ。
ミドルスクールに入ってからバンドを始めた次男は、
音楽的要素を高く評価して、ドラムの奏でるリズムに聴き入っていた。
「ブルーマン」舞台には、「仲間はずれ」というテーマが隠れている。
３人グループのうち、２人が組めば、残りの１人は「仲間はずれ」になる。
シニカルな「いじめ」から、観衆の笑いを取るというのも特徴。
でも、人数の多いマジョリティーにマイノリティーが従うことだけが、
解決策ではないことが、無言のなかに語られている。
２人の力が強くても、正しい１人に合わせて寄り添うことが大事。
観劇後に、こんな感想を語り合う親子がもっと増えれば良いなと思う。
こんなところにも、世界平和を考えるツールはたくさんあるのだから。
