東京都内でのコロナ感染者数が1日100人を超えて大騒ぎとなっていた時、
ピークを過ぎたとはいえ、米国では２桁違いの数字が報告されていた。
少しでも早く、ニューヨークを脱出しよう。
そう決めたのは、５月後半。
毎年夏の一時帰国では、子供達の学校が終わってからニューヨークを出発する。
しかし国際便の運休が続き、航空運賃は軒並み高騰していた。
入国時のPCR検査と自主隔離期間を考慮すると、２週間は何もできない。
夏に決まっている仕事の日程から逆算すると、６月中には日本に行こう。
オンラインスクールの最中であった子供たちにも、意思を確認する。
年老いた祖父母と年に一度会えるチャンス、やはり日本に行きたいと。
厚労省の支援業務で海外からの帰国者のケアをしている元同僚が、
懇切丁寧に帰国者のプロシージャーを連絡してくれて、準備は整った。
閑散としたJFK空港、唯一開いていた売店で飲料水を買い込んで搭乗する。
マスクとゴーグル、手袋姿で出迎えてくれる日本人CAの笑顔、やはり安心する。
思っていたほどガラガラではなかったが、グループ同士が隣席にならないよう、
しっかりシートアレンジされていたのはありがたかった。
13時間のフライトと、成田空港での検疫。
祖国に辿り着くまでの、長い道のりが始まった。

At JFK Airport, I bought some drinking water at the only shop that was open, and boarded the plane.
The smiling faces of Japanese CAs wearing masks, goggles and gloves made us feel at ease.
It wasn't so crowded as I thought, but the groups would not be seated next to each other.
we were grateful that the seats were arranged well.
We passed the 13-hours flight and the quarantine at Narita Airport.
It was a long journey to reach the motherland.
