海外に都立高校同窓会の米国支部があるのは珍しいらしい。
私が属するそれは、発足以来毎年、米国のどこかで総会が開催されている。
今年の総会はニューヨークで開催。
マンハッタンから車で40分ほどのウェストチェスター、
ハドソン川越しの広大な景色を見渡せるレストランでランチ会。
その後、ロックフェラー家の住まいを見学するツアーに参加。
カイカットという土地に、初めて足を踏み入れた。
米国最大の石油王、資本家であったジョン・ロックフェラー氏が建てた豪邸は、築100年以上、40室からなるお城のような佇まい。
しかし、中はいたってシックな造りで、蔵書のセンスも素晴らしい。
現在でも３代目のロックフェラー氏が住居として使用しており、
一般開放されているのはごく一部で、撮影もできない。
それにしても、お屋敷から見えるハドソンリバーの偉大さと、
どこまでも境界線のない広大な景色に圧倒される。
日本で台風被害を受けた河川敷沿いのニュース映像に衝撃を受けながら、
いつの時代も、富裕層は高い土地に住むものだと、つくづく思う。

This organization that I belong has held the general meeting somewhere in the United States every year since its inception.

The mansion built by John D. Rockefeller, the largest oil king and capitalist in the United States, looks like a castle with 40 rooms that built more than 100 years ago.
However, the inside is very chic and the sense of the collection is wonderful.
Even now, the third generation of Rockefeller uses it as a residence,
There are only a few that are open to the public, and photography is not possible.
Even so, the greatness of the Hudson River seen from the mansion,
We were overwhelmed by the vast scenery without boundaries.
While being shocked by the news video along the riverbed damaged by typhoons in Japan,
We know that wealthy people live in high land.
