ニューヨークの街を初めて歩いた頃、まず目についたのが「旗を掲げている建物がやたらに多い」ということだった。
ホテル、デパート、領事館、美術館、図書館、公園、、、。
我が国ニッポンで、国民の祝日に日の丸を掲げる光景は見慣れているが、年間365日を通してアメリカ国旗が掲げられている街に、この国の人がいかに自国を愛し誇りを持っているかを感じてしまう。
周知のとおり、星条旗の赤白の横縞は独立当時の13の入植地をあらわし、左上には現在の50州をあらわす白い星が並んでいる。
赤は勇気、白は真実、青は正義のしるしである。
国旗掲揚は「時計まわりに90度まわして」掲げるというのが国際ルールであるが、星条旗だけは例外で、カントンと呼ばれる白星の部分が常に左上にくるように「時計回りに90度まわしてから裏返す」のが正式な揚げ方である。
日の丸のように前後左右対称な国旗では間違えようがないが、儀典担当者が国際儀礼上でどんなに神経を使っても、合衆国旗の誤掲揚は後を絶たないのだという。
2012年、まもなく開催されるロンドンオリンピックの表彰式で、日の丸が見られることを切望しながら、星条旗が正しく掲揚されることも祈っている。
When I was walking the streets of New York for the first time, it was first
attached to my eye that there were a lot of buildings that carried the
banner.
Hotels, Department stores, Consulates, Museums, Libraries, Parks...
We often see the flag listed on national holidays in our country, Japan.
But here, I feel how much people love this country and how they are proud
of the USA when I see the American flag has been raised through 365 days.
As well known, the horizontal stripes of red and white of the American flag
represent the 13 settlements at the time of independence. White stars
lined up in the upper left corner represent the current 50 states.
Red is courage, white is truth, and blue is often a sign of justice.
Hoisting the national flag "by turning 90 degrees clockwise" is the
international rule.
But for the Stars and Stripes is an exception.
It is the formal way, "from Turn 90 degrees clockwise and turn over” so
called Canton, a part of stars, is always put the upper left corner.
There is no such mistake for raising flag, symmetrical like the Japanese
flag.
But I hear that the unending that there happens mistake to raise the US
flag on the international ceremony, no matter how personnel with the
nerves.
There will be held the awards ceremony of the London Olympic Games in
2012, shortly.
While I'm longing to see the Japanese flag "the Rising Sun" praying the US
flag "Stars and Stripes" will be hoisted properly.
