「東京に木枯らし一号」いうニュースが届いた。
米国はまもなく夏時間から冬時間に切り替わり、ニューヨークには早くも「土曜日に雪」の天気予報マークが登場した。
街の様相も、人々の気持ちも、確実に冬のホリデーシーズンに向けて準備が始まっている。
ハロウィンは、日本でいうお盆のような行事である。
死者の霊が家族を訪ねてくる収穫感謝祭の時、精霊や魔女が家に入ってくるのを防ぐために、さまざまな「魔除け」の趣向を凝らす。
子供達が変装して近所を徘徊する「トリック・オア・トリート」も、カボチャに表情をつけて玄関に飾る「ジャック・オー・ランタン」も、本来は悪い霊を怖がらせるためのものなのだ。
（自分達の御先祖様が自分の家を怖がって入ってこられないのではという懸念を、昔の人は持っていなかったのか、いささか疑問ではあるが。）
各家庭では、数キロのトリート(お菓子)を準備して、まもなく当日を迎える。
ナッツアレルギーの子供達が多くなった昨今、「スニッカーズ」も「M&M’s」もトリート用の籠には入れておけないというのが常識になりつつある。
ハロウィン、サンクスギビング、クリスマス･･･。まだまだ出費が嵩みそうな気配。

forecast has marked "snow" in New York on this Saturday.
The U.S. will switch from summer to winter time soon.
Both the city and people are starting to prepare for the winter holiday
season, certainly.
Halloween is an event like Japanese Obon.
When the spirits of dead come to visit the family, people set various
"amulet" to prevent wrong dead spirits and witches from entering the
house.
Kids go around the neighborhood for "trick or treat", and we decorate the
pumpkin "jack-o-lantern".
They originally intended to scare the bad spirits.
(I doubt that the old people had concern that the spirits of dead of their
ancestors could not enter into their own homes.)
Each family prepares a few pounds of " treat ", and is ready to celebrate
the day.
Leaving the treat basket without "Snickers" and "M&M's" is becoming
common sense, since there are a nut allergy children recently.
Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas .... we have to spend much money in
the holiday season.
