ニューヨーク在住の「７本指のピアニスト」西川悟平氏、
昨年から拠点を日本に移して、ずっとコンサート活動を続けている。
私もタイミングが合えば、銀座のスタジオに、彼の音色を聴きに行く。
神経障害ジストニアに罹って以来、右手５本と左手２本の指だけの演奏は、
そのレパートリーにも限りがあり、新曲をお披露目するまでに時間もかかる。
日曜日、コンサートが終わってから、西川氏が尋ねてきた。
「同じ曲ばかり弾いているのに、ずっと応援してくれるのはなぜ？」
私の答えに迷いはない。
彼は、私が本当に苦しい時に助けてくれた。
外に伝える勇気を躊躇していた時、どれほどの勇気をもらっただろう。
西川氏の音色は、強く優しい。
彼の奏でるメロディーを心で追いながら、強く優しい人でありたいと改めて思う。
最後に弾いてくれたアラジンの「A Whole New World」が、
私にまた新しい勇気をくれた。
Gohei Nishikawa, a "seven-fingered pianist" who lives in New York,
he has been based in Japan since last year and continues to give concerts.
When I have a chance, I go to his studio in Ginza to listen to his piano.
Since suffering from a neurological disorder, dystonia, he plays piano with just his five right hands and two left fingers.
His repertoire is limited, and it takes time to unveil new songs.
On Sunday, after the concert was over, Mr. Nishikawa asked me,
"Why do you keep supporting me when you keep playing the same songs?
There is no doubt about my answer.
He helped me when I was really struggling.
I wonder how much courage he gave me when I was hesitant to tell the world.
Nishikawa's piano sound is strong and gentle.
As I followed the melody he played, I was reminded of how much I want to be a strong and gentle person.
The last piece he played for us, Aladdin's "A Whole New World," had given me new courage again.
