今年の911は、つい先日までの暑さが嘘のように寒い朝だった。
気温摂氏13度。
あの日と同じように快晴。
朝からヘリコプターが上空を飛び、街なかには哀悼の意を捧げる半旗が掲げられる。
厳戒態勢の中、今年も被害に遭われた方々の名前を遺族達が読み上げる。
永遠に続くその声に、胸が苦しく押しつぶされそうになる。
あの日、世界貿易センタービルに飛行機が突っ込んだ時、現地から３キロ離れた場所にいた一人の日本人がいた。
私もニューヨークでたくさん仕事を御一緒させていただいたカメラマン、上重泰秀さん。
「何でだ」という言葉が湧き上がった以外は「思考回路が止まったまま」、彼はカメラを携えて現場へ向かった。
理由も経過も分からず、予測のつかない不安な気持ちのままで、戦場さながらの現場付近でひたすらシャッターを切った。
決して忘れてはならない、風化させてはならないあの日の記録が、ここにある。
毎年この日は、雲一つない秋晴れが広がる。
摩天楼が目に鮮やかにうつるほど澄んだ空。
11年前のあの日、もし天候が悪かったら、惨劇は起こらなかったのかもしれないと思うと「運命」について考えざるを得ない。
上重さんは、その後しばらくして日本に帰国されてしまったが、彼のジャーナリスト魂は、ニューヨークで生きる若手カメラマン達に確実に引き継がれていると思いたい。

September 11th of 2012 was a cold morning that we didn't imagine.
Temperature was 13 degrees Celsius.
It was sunny day in the same way as that day.
Helicopters flied over from the early morning, and people offered
condolences with raising flags at half-mast in the city.
The survivor in people read aloud the name of victim at the ground
zero on high alert.
My painful heart was about to be crushed by the voice that lasts forever.
On that day, when the plane slammed into the World Trade Center, one
Japanese photographer was three kilometers away from the field.
His name was Mr. Yasuhide Joju that I had a lot of work with in New York.
His "thinking circuit has stopped" except that the word "why" was bubbling
up.
But he went to the scene armed with camera.
Without understanding the reason, remained unpredictable feeling
uneasy, he took the photos earnestly in the vicinity of the site just like
the battlefield.
Here is a record of that day that should not be forgot and weathered.
On this day every year, the sky spread cloudless as autumn sunny.
It was the clear sky that skyscraper shined to eyes.
If the weather was bad on that day 11 years ago, the tragedy might had
not happened.
Now I can’t help thinking about "destiny".
He had been returned to Japan after a while and then, but I want to think
that his journalism soul has been carried over to ensure to the young
photographer living in New York.
