幹線道路が10数ブロックにわたって通行止めになり、交通渋滞の原因にもなるとはいえ、お祭り付きの国民性もあって、フェアはどこでも大盛況。
各ベンダーの出店場所を仕切る組織があって、いつも同じような顔ぶれがそろうのも、日本のそれと同じ。
生憎の小雨が降りしきる週末に開催されたTaste of Tribeca。
トライベッカ地区のストリートフェアだけは、地区組織が主催している。
他と一線を画しているのは、場所代を地区組織が提供する代わりに、出店者は売り上げのすべてをそのまま地区組織に寄付する。
全国区でも有名な、トライベッカを代表するそうそうたるレストランが軒を並べるため、50ドルのチケット(6食分)が飛ぶように売れていく。
欧米中で日本食文化がすっかり定着した昨今だが、その発展に貢献した数々の日系レストランがトライベッカ地区出身。
ここからまた全米へ、世界へ飛躍する日系文化を応援していきたい。
