日本との時差14時間のなかで、早朝から紅白を観ようと思って起きたのに、
TVリモコンの操作の仕方が分からない。
この新しいTVが我が家に来て２年以上経つのに、ボタンの種類も分からない。
試行錯誤すること１時間。
ようやくテレビジャパンの画面が映った時、日本はすでに午後10時過ぎ。
松田聖子の「瑠璃色の地球」に泣いて、千璃に会いたくなった。
「ゆく年くる年」で除夜の鐘の音を聴きながら、大掃除の仕上げ。
2020年最後の夕食は、子供たちとメキシカンを作って食べた。
夫は日本で、長女は寮にいて、残りの家族で静かにカウントダウンを待つ。
祖父から伝えられた家訓。
「新年は家中の明かりをつけて福を呼び込む準備をする」
ブラインドを開けて、クリスマスツリーにまたライトを灯して、待った。
タイムズスクウェアのカウントダウンは、例年のように世界中継され、
ボールドロップをみんなで見守った。
そして時間は止まることなく、2021年がやってきた。
安易におめでとうとは言えないけれど。

I woke up early in the morning to watch "Kohaku _ TV Japan," despite the 14-hour time difference between Japan and Japan.
I didn't know how to use the TV remote control.
It's been more than two years since we got this new TV, and I don't even know what buttons are on it.
It took me an hour of trial and error.
When I finally saw the TV Japan screen, it was already past 10 p.m. in Japan.
I cried to Seiko Matsuda's "Ruri Iro no Chikyu" and wanted to see my daughter, Seri.
As I listened to the sound of the night bells ringing in "Yuku Toshi, Kuru Toshi," I finished up my cleaning.
For the last dinner of 2020, I cooked and ate Mexican food with my children.
My husband was in Japan, my eldest daughter was in the dormitory, and the rest of the family was quietly waiting for the countdown.
There is a family tradition passed down from my grandfather.
"On New Year's, we turn on all the lights in the house and prepare to bring in good fortune."
We opened the blinds, lit up the Christmas tree again, and waited.
The countdown in Times Square, as it always is, would be broadcast worldwide.
We all watched the ball drop.
Time never stops, and 2021 has arrived.
It's not easy to say "Happy New Year," though.
