東京都東村山市にある国宝・正福寺千体地蔵堂

東京都の東村山市は、先の新型コロナで惜しくもお亡くなりになった
志村けんさんが歌っていた「東村山三丁目」でご存じの方も多いかと思います。
Many of you may know Higashimurayama City in Tokyo from the song "Higashimurayama 3-chome" sung by Ken Shimura, who sadly passed away in the new Corona.
その東村山市には、東京都内で唯一の国宝の建造物があります。

正福寺千体地蔵堂
That is Shofukuji Temple's Sentai Jizo Hall.
唐様建築（鎌倉時代に禅宗とともに中国から伝来した建築様式で，
木割が細く，軒反が強く，屋根の傾斜が急で，
細部に装飾の多い）を代表する建築物で、
波型欄間・花頭窓・屋根の反りなどに特徴がある。
It is a representative building of the Karastyle architecture (an architectural style introduced from China along with Zen Buddhism in the Kamakura period (1185-1333), with thin wood splits, strong eaves, steeply sloping roofs, and many decorative details), and is characterized by its corrugated railings, flower-headed windows, and warped roof.
この建築物の建立年代は、昭和８～９年の屋根（こけら葺き）に
改修した際に発見された墨書銘により
応永14年（室町時代・1407年）であることがわかった。
The construction date of this building was found to be 1407 in the Muromachi period (1336-1573), according to an inscription in Chinese ink found during the renovation of the roof in 1933.
寺の縁起では鎌倉幕府の執権北条時宗（在職1268年-1284年）が
鷹狩りの際に病にかかり、夢の中で地蔵菩薩からもらった丸薬で
病が治ったことから地蔵堂を建立したといわれている。
According to the temple's origin story, Hojo Tokimune, the regent of the Kamakura Shogunate (in office from 1268 to 1284), fell ill while hawking falcons and was cured of his illness by a pill given to him by Jizo Bosatsu in a dream.
この地蔵堂の裏手には、宮崎駿監督の映画で有名な「となりのトトロ」に
地名として出てくる「七国山」のモデルとなった八国山（標高89.4 m）がある。

この山には8世紀ごろの古墳と思しき将軍塚（富士塚）があり須恵器が出土している。

山のふもとにはこれも電車のモデルとなった西武鉄道西武園線が通り、
6月には隣接する北山公園に菖蒲が咲き誇り、東村山菖蒲まつりが行われる。
