Sengen-zuka burial mound (10), where Maedama Shrine, the name of Saitama Prefecture, is located
Until relatively recently, it was unclear whether it was a burial mound or a later mound, but excavations in 1997 and 1998 confirmed a 10-meter wide perimeter moat, making it almost certainly a burial mound.
However, it seems that it has not been officially included in the Sakatama Kofun group.
Climbing up the steep stairs of the tomb, you will find the Sengen Shrine in the middle of the tomb, and the top of the tomb is the Sakitama Shrine.
The mound is a round mound with a diameter of 58m and a height of 8.7m.
A circular moat 10m wide was discovered.
There seems to be no haniwa (clay figurine), but there is a hornblende andesite near the Ema Hall in the southwestern part of the tomb that is thought to be the stone material for the stone chamber.
The tomb is estimated to have been built around 610-640 A.C. (the first half of the 7th century), and is said to be important when considering the end of the tomb group.
There is also a monument to the Russo-Japanese War in the woods behind the tomb, but it is made from the ceiling stone of the stone chamber of the defunct Wakaoji tomb.
What is the extinct Wakaoji Tumulus?
At the time of excavation in the Meiji era (1868-1912), the Wakaoji burial mound was a magnificent 95-meter-long, posterior-anterior-cylindrical mound with a diameter of 44 meters and a height of 7.4 meters at the back, and a width of 56 meters and a height of 3 meters at the front.
The burial facilities included a stone chamber 20m deep and a stone coffin 3m long and 1.3m wide.
In addition to the Wakaoji burial mound, there were seven other round burial mounds in the Wakaoji burial mound group, but they all disappeared when the fill of the mound was used for the Kohari swamp reclamation work in 1934.
About Maedama Shrine
Sakitama Shrine, which sits at the top of the mound, has such a long history that its name is mentioned in the EngiShiki Shinmeicho of the Heian period (794-1185), and is connected to the current name of Saitama Prefecture.
