(23)

I would like to introduce to you...
The ruins of Daikandaiji Temple, quietly located in Oyama, Asuka Village, Nara Prefecture

Daikantaiji Temple is said to be the largest temple built in the Asuka area during the Asuka Period. However, it was destroyed by fire in 711 AC in Fujiwara-kyo.

Now, there is only an information board and a stone pillar in the deserted grass.

According to the excavation, the layout of the temple was as follows: the middle gate, Kondo, and lecture hall were all in a row, and the pagoda was placed only in the eastern part of the corridor connecting the middle gate and Kondo.
The pagoda is located only in the eastern part of the corridor connecting the central gate and the main hall.

It was probably planned to be built in the western part of the corridor, just like Daian-ji.

The area surrounded by the cloister is 144m east-west and 195m north-south, the same size as the original cloister of Todaiji Temple.

The base of the pagoda is about 35 meters on a side, and the pagoda is 15 meters on a side.
It is estimated that the pagoda was about the same size as the East Pagoda of Todaiji Temple (about 100m high).

This is much larger than the five-story pagoda of Toji Temple in Kyoto.

Daikantai-ji must have been the largest temple in Asuka.

It is known that when the temple burned down, the rafters of the main hall and the middle gate were burned down and stuck into the ground.
