Today I would like to introduce you to the Ofune site in Hakodate (4)

The Ofuna site is located on the terraces of the Ofuna River for the purpose of food procurement.

and is characterized by the remains of over 100 pit buildings and large scale fill (dumping ground and ritual site).

I was particularly surprised to see the remains of a large pit dwelling, 2m deep and over 10m in diameter!

Four times the average depth I've seen! The diameter reaches twice that!

This settlement was built between 3200 BC and 2000 BC (around the middle of the pre-Jomon period).

Apparently, there are still many unexcavated remains of houses under the ground!

It has been pointed out that the large-scale embankment remains may have functioned as a "dumping ground" and a place for rituals to send the dead to the afterlife

About 200,000 artifacts have been excavated, including whales and other large sea creatures, as well as more than 2,000 stone plates.

The excavated artifacts are on display at the Jomon Culture Exchange Center in Hakodate.
