Professor Waverly Persons explained about his work kindly.
USGS is a Research Center of earthquake, and it shares its data with countries all over the world. http://www.usgs.gov/
He explained the differences between earthquake in Haiti and in Chile.
Based on U.S. Geological Survey figures, the earthquake in Haiti had the magnitude of 7.0, and 23000 people were killed.
On the other hand, 8.8-magnitude earthquake in Chile could rank as one of the most powerful in history, and 510 people were killed.
What are their differences?
The crucial point was aseismic capacity.
The number of earthquake victime indicates that construction in Chile is better than Port au Prince, although a big step down from Japan and California.
I am glad to visit this center because our prefecture experienced the big earthquake two years ago.
This is equipment that measures earthquake, and located all over the world.
