スカボローフェアのことを思い出したのは、I recalled the song named Scarborough Fair ウクレレで弾く新しい曲を探していて、when I happened to come across the British folk song searching new tunes for my ukulele practice. 偶然このイギリス民謡にたどり着いたからです。
サイモンアンドガーファンクルの曲だと思っていましたが、I thought it was a song by Simon and Garfunkel, which is actually a time-honored traditional one. 元はとても古い伝統的な歌だったのですね。歌詞が昔から不思議でした。I've wondered what its lyrics meant for years. あの何度も繰り返されるハーブの名前。It is mysterious that these herb names appear repeatedly in them.
スカボローとはイギリスの街の名前で、Scarborough is a town in Britain and the fair means a market. フェアとは市場のことで、最初の歌詞は「スカボローの市に行きますか？」と始まるので、And the lyrics begin with a question: Are you going to Scarborough Fair? 野菜や果物が野外のテントの下でたくさん積まれているイメージが頭に浮かびます。I can imagine under the cloth roofs, lots of vegetables and fruits are piled up. ハーブもその中にあるかもしれません。It is natural that herbs are among them.

存在しないものを求めるのは、Asking for things that can't be obtained could symbolize the distance between the two. 二人の距離の大きさを象徴しているように感じます。歴史的な意味があるとも言われています。Some researchers say they have historical connotations.
日本のわらべ歌やイギリスのマザーグースと同様に不思議な歌詞は、Like Japanese children's songs and British nursery rhymes, their mystic lines may not allow us to interpret, 解釈を許さないものかもしれませんが、そのメロディと共に不思議な魅力を感じています。nevertheless, I feel undescribable allures in its melody and lyrics.
こちらは、Here are roses called Scarborough Fair. スカボローフェアと言う名前のバラです。柔らかいピンクがいいですね。I love their soft pink. 笑っている少女のようです。They have an image of smiling girls to me.
