TV「世界遺産」で、On a TV program called "World Heritages", I saw a city designed by a maharaja who loved stars. 星を愛したマハラジャの街を見ました。マハラジャとは、Maharajas are local feudal lords like those in Japan's battle era in the 16th century, but each of them regarded their territories as nations. 日本で言う戦国大名のような地方領主ですが、それぞれが国を名乗っていました。
ジャイプールは、Jaipur is a city built by the maharaja in the early 18th century. 十八世紀初頭にマハラジャが作った街です。碁盤の目のように整然と区画された街並み、The streets devided into squares like a chess board, and the places called "Pink City" are all beautiful, ピンクシティと呼ばれる宮殿も素晴らしいのですが、特に印象的だったのは巨大な階段のような施設です。but the most impressive for me is a gigantic facility composed of big stairs. 宗教儀式の場所かと思いましたが、I thought it was a place for religious rituals, but actually they are gnomons and an observatory for stars. 正体は日時計と天体観測施設でした。
当時最高の天文学者でもあったマハラジャは街を設計する前に天体観測施設を作ったそうです。The maharaja who was also an excellent astronomer at that time created this facility first of all the city streets. 2分まで測れる精密さに驚きます。It's amazing for the gnomon can measure two minutes.
