日本語は難しいとよく聞きますが、We often hear that Japanese is difficult, それは何と比べているのでしょうか？but what do they compare it with? もし難しいとしたら簡略化すべきなのでしょうか?If it is really hard, should we simplify the language?
日本人が一番多く習う外国語は英語なので、As most Japanese people learn English, 英語と比べている場合が多いと考えられます。we probably compare our mother tongue with it. でも、そもそも言葉は文化と深く結びついています。Said that, languages are deeply connected to cultures. ひとつの言語を真に理解するには文法や構文を知るだけではなく、If we are to understand a certain language truly, we need to know its background culture. その背景となる文化を知らなければなりません。そう考えると、Taking the fact into consideration, 全ての言語は難しく、比較も無意味に思えてきます。all of them are hard to appreciate, so comparison seems to be nonsense.
文法や表記だけで考えると日本語は英語より複雑なのは確かです。If you check merely grammar and writing system, Japanese is more complicated than English. とにかく文字の種類が多いですね。We have many characters. 敬語も尊敬語・丁寧語以外に謙譲語が存在します。助詞もあります。To show respect to others, we have three kinds of expressions : honorific, polite, and humble. Japanese also has joshi, short words to express relations with each other word. Then, should Japanese abolish Chinese characters to introduce alphabets? では、日本語は漢字を捨て、ローマ字を採用すべきなのでしょうか?
私はそうは思いません。I don't think so. 表意文字としての漢字には魅力があります。Chinese characters as ideographs have their own appeals. 複雑な内容を１文字で表せたり、Each character can represent a profound concept, 文字を見るだけでどのような意味か想像がつくところは便利です。and we can imagine its meaning just seeing the characters. 平仮名やカタカナは表音文字として漢字と違った役割があり、Hiragana or curved phonetic symbols and Katakana, or sharp counterpart of hiragana have each role in Japanese writing system, thus using three of them including Chinese characters makes a unique atmosphere. 混ぜて書くと独特の風合いが生まれます。外国人から見て習得しにくいからというだけで変えてしまえばこれまで築いてきた文化が失われます。If we change its writing system just because it is hard to acquire for non-natives, it would lose our time-honored culture.
日本の文化は海外の人を惹きつけています。Japan's culture fascinates many people overseas. それと同様に日本語もその特徴で日本人にとっても外国人にとっても興味深いものです。In the same token, its language is interesting for non-natives as well as for ourselves. 簡単に捨てるべきではありません。We shouldn't abandon its tradition easily. 私は教える立場にはなりましたが、Although I've been teaching it, これからも一生学び続けたいです。I want to continue learning it for the rest of my life.
