マシューさんは他の外国人と同じように日本のアニメからヒーローに興味を持ち、忍者に憧れる少年でした。Matthew came to be interested in Japanese anime heroes just like other boys adoring characters such as Ninja. 日本への興味が高じてトロント大学で日本文化を学ぶようになり、His fascination with Japan surged to make him study its culture at Toronto university. 二十歳の頃に日本に留学しましたが、たまたま関西だったので大阪弁が身についてしまい、カナダに帰って標準語を覚えるのに苦労したそうです。When he came to this country for the first time to study at twenty years old, staying in Kansai region by chance led him to acquire Osaka dialect so deeply that he had a tough time learning standard Japanese back in Canada.
その後再来日して新潟の地酒を楽しむ会に入り、After he got back to Japan, he joined a community group to enjoy local Sake in Niigata, 偶然酒の器としての銅器に出会いました。which gave him an opportunity to encounter copperware as a sake container. 海外に魅力を伝えてほしいと頼まれ、The maneger at the factory asked him to convey its attraction to other countries, when he agreed to translate their website and interepret the artisans explanations for visitors once a week. 週に一度の約束でホームページの翻訳や観光客の通訳をしたことがきっかけとなり、自分でも作るようになりました。He eventually came to be in the field as an artisan himself because it wasn't enough for him to just translate other workers talks in order to express genuine fascination of the producs. この器の魅力を伝えようとした時、ただ他の職人さんから話を聞いているだけでは足りない気持ちになったそうです。
誠実な人柄で何かに夢中になると止まらない性格の方ですね。He seems to be sincere enthusiastic kind of a person who can't stop doing what he is absorbed in. 今では日本人の奥様と暮らし、毎日どんどん日本人になっている気がすると笑います。He says with a smile he is becoming Japanese more and more as he is settled in the town with his Japanese wife and a daughter.
