光源氏にはひとつだけどうにもならない不幸がありました。Hikaru Genji has one big misfortune that he can do nothing about it. 幼い頃母を亡くしたことです。That is he lost his mother when he was a toddler.
そのため彼は一生母に似た女性を探し続ける旅をしているのです。That's why he's been searching for a woman just like his mother all his life. 最初は父帝の後妻、藤壺でした。The first one was named Fujitsubo, one of the wives of his father. 彼女は源氏より僅か5歳しか年上でなく、She is just five years older than him, 最初は母に似ているから慕っていたのが大人になるにつれて抑えがたい恋となり、he adored her since she looked like her mother but as he grows up, he can't control his passion 不倫に発展してしまいます。and their relationship becomes a love affair.
身勝手ではありますが、Although his motivation is a selfish one, 寂しさは理解できます。I can understand his loneliness. 身体が結ばれても、Even after their relationship has become intimate, 父への罪の意識、Genji is suffering from guilty conscious for his father, and from Fujitsubo's giving cold shoulder against him. その後の藤壺の拒否など、源氏は苦しみます。美しい外見も高い身分も幸福には繋がらず、His good looks and high status doesn't help him find happiness, 無力でした。he tries in vain.
その間に偶然見つけたのが藤壺の姪、While he happens to find Fujitsubo's niece, Wakamurasaki. 若紫です。She later comes to be called Murasaki-no-ue. 彼女が後の紫の上です。続きます。To be continued.
