このカウシルズも当ブログには過去何回か登場している「雨に消えた初恋」のヒットで有名なグループである。彼らは「パートリッジ・ファミリー」のモデルとなった所謂ファミリー・バンドで当初は父親バド・カウシル(1925年12月2日-1992年9月29日）の指揮の下、母バーバラ・カウシル（1928年7月12日-1985年1月31日）と７人の子供たちからなるグループであったが、時に母＋6人（あるいは5人）の子供の計6～7人組みで活動している時期もある。
しかし彼らはレコード・デビュー前にはビリー、ボブ、ジョン、バリーの4兄弟で、ビートルズやビーチ・ボーイズのようなバンドを目指していた（但しその頃は全員10代前半）という経緯もあり、演奏・コーラスとも実力は確かなものがある。

彼らはカウシルズ解散後もソロで活躍しリチャードを除くメンバーそれぞれがアルバムを何枚か発表している。特に一番若いスーザン・カウシルは1992年以降コンティネンタル・ドリフターズ（Continental Drifters）のメンバーとしても活躍している。

これが元ヴァージョン。このyou tubeでは前述のようなアマチュア時代のデビュー前にビートルズやビーチ・ボーイズのコピーをしていた兄弟4人しか映っていないので、カウシルズもひょっとするとビートルズやモンキーズのように男性4人組みでの活動を目指していたのかも知れない。1967年ころの映像と思うので、全員ティーンエイジャーだろう。
収録曲は年長のビルとボブとコーンフェルドとの共作曲が多い。

最近再びカウシルズとして活動している最年少のスーザン・カウシル（上のYOU TUBEにも出ている）は冒頭にも書いた通り1959年生まれ。1959年といえばあのマイケル・ジャクソンの1つ下の同世代人で、しかも同じファミリーバンド出身。何となく両者は売ったCDの数こそ格段に違うが、幼いころから活躍をしていたという似たような経歴がある。
その彼女が歌った "Be my baby"中々イケテル作品だ。

Back in the 1960's, four brothers who wanted to be The Beatles formed a band called The Cowsills. The original Cowsills consisted of Bill on guitar, Bob on guitar and organ, Barry on bass and John on drums. Early gigs were at school dances and churches around their home in Newport, RI. Eventually, as their harmonic sound was perfected, they got a regular gig on Bannisters Wharf in Newport where they would sing Beatle songs hour after hour. Early recordings were released by the four brothers on Mercury Records. Barbara ("mini-mom") joined the group to record The Rain, The Park and Other Things and shortly thereafter 7 year old Susan and brother, Paul, were added to the group. They were signed by MGM records and the group began it's climb to the top!
Here's what Bob had to say about the early days and getting started:
1960年代後半～1970年代初頭にかけて上演されたミュージカル「ヘアー」の曲としては劇の最初と最後の曲をメドレーにしてカバーした、フィフス・ディメンションの「Aquarious～Let The Sunshine In／輝く星座」が取り分け有名だが、カウシルズも挿入曲「ヘアー」をカヴァーしている。劇中ではこの曲を「髪の毛を振り乱しながら」歌い踊っているが、カウシルズはそんなことはしていない。この曲を発売した頃は少女だったスーザンも堂々のソロを取っている。

ここで聴く曲はカウシルズではなく、ザ・バッキンガムズの「スーザン」である。（この「バッキンガムズ」もいずれはご紹介したいブラスロックの先駆的グループ）
この「スーザン」のメロディに乗って少女時代のスーザンを中心とした「カウシルズ」の貴重な映像が流れるバースディ・プレゼント作品。こんな作品があることからもスーザン・カウシルは全米で昔から人気者であったことが、伺い知れる。
ところでこの「スーザン」と言う曲だが、途中ビートルズの「ア・デイ・イン・ザ・ライフ」のような前衛的な部分を中間に挟んだ中々イケテル作品だ。
