2016年9月、はじめてフランスを訪れた。アメリカ留学時代の仲良し女ともだち3人が、デンマーク、横浜、東京からパリに集結するという10日間の旅。ホテルではなく民宿に泊まることになり、コペンハーゲンに住むインド人Cさんが、あらかじめネットで適当なアパートを探してくれた。ルクセンブルグ公園近くの閑静で安全な住宅街の一室には、小さいながらも中庭が付いており、時おりそこで朝食を取った。フランス人気取りで、交代でそれぞれに特徴あるオムレツを準備した。綿密な計画を立てて効率よく動くなんてことのない我ら3人、大雑把に今日はオルセー美術館へ、次はセーヌ川下り、モネの睡蓮の庭を見たいとなれば、パリからバスでジベルニーの村まで遠出した。鮮やかな黄色とブルーで統一されていたと記憶するが、整然としたモネ家のキッチンは印象的だった。カトリック信者である私にとっては、ノートルダム大聖堂と不思議のメダイの聖母の聖堂は欠かせない巡礼の地になった。かつて貴族の屋敷だったという建物は、ピカソ美術館になっていた。散々迷ってたどり着いたマレ地区の美術館、ピカソの作品を心いくまで堪能した。また別の日には、日本人シェフが経営するという小さなレストランで、二人の旅仲間が私の誕生日を祝ってランチをご馳走してくれた。アパート近くの店でバゲットとチーズとハム、そしてワインを調達しての簡単夕食もおいしかった。たくさん歩き、地下鉄に乗り、バスを乗り継いでの急がない気ままなパリ見物、もう一度体験したいな。
In September 2016, I visited Paris for the first time together with two of my old friends: an Indian friend who has been living in Denmark and a Japanese from Yokohama. Three of us were graduate students at the same time in Honolulu, Hawaii. We lived in the same women's dorm and shared interesting international life more than 50 years ago. We decided to spend some time in Paris to visit museums, churches and other famous sightseeing spots. One of the memorable experiences we enjoyed was we stayed at one of the private apartments in the city that was owned by an elderly French woman artist. There were two bedrooms, a living room, a dining kitchen and a bathroom there. We were allowed to use everything in the house including kitchen utensils and plates. Wonderful 10 days we had!
