Search continues for New York
gunman who shot two on Long Island

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The search for a suspected gunman who shot two people, killing one, in what was described as a workplace incident in the New York suburb of Garden City, Long Island, shifted on Thursday to the town where the man's abandoned SUV was recovered, authorities said.

Local police believe Sang Ho Kim, 63, walked into lighting company Savenergy Inc on Wednesday morning and shot the company's president and another male employee with a handgun before fleeing.

Nassau County Police Chief Steve Skrynecki described Kim as a disgruntled former employee who might have been upset over a "bad business deal."

An abandoned white Honda Pilot sports utility vehicle that police say belongs to Kim was found in Cold Spring on Wednesday night, Nassau County police said. Cold Spring, in New York's Hudson Valley, sits 60 miles from Garden City.

Don Smith, the sheriff of Putnam County, has urged residents in the area to be cautious, to lock the doors of their homes and to not leave keys in their vehicles, and ordered schools in the district to close on Thursday.

Nassau County police have said they do not believe Kim, described as a 6-foot-2 Asian male who was wearing a red shirt and brown suit jacket, was a threat to the public.

John Choi, the founder and president of Savenergy, was in critical but stable condition, said Shelley Lotenberg, a spokeswoman for the Nassau University Medical Center. Police have not released the name of the man who was killed.

Savenergy is in a commercial part of Garden City, about 20 miles east of Manhattan, authorities said.

Search On for Shooter
Gunman Kills One and Injures Another Inside a Business in Nassau County

By TAMER EL-GHOBASHYand PERVAIZ SHALLWANI

One man was killed and another injured by a gunman who opened fire inside a light-fixture importing company near the Roosevelt Field Mall in Nassau County on Wednesday, sparking a massive manhunt, police said.

Sang Ho Kim, a 64-year-old Queens resident, allegedly walked into Savenergy at 645 South St., around 10:10 am and shot two employees, police said. The company is located in a single-story commercial building in East Garden City, near the shopping center.

The spasm of violence caused an immediate lockdown of the large mall and nearby schools as police conducted a detailed search of the area.

At a news conference, police said they believe Mr. Kim has been working as a vendor to the company and that he allegedly targeted it.

"At this point and time we believe that this suspect is armed and very dangerous," Nassau County Police Chief of Department Steven Skrynecki. "Right now we are involved in a very massive hunt for this individual."

There were four employees inside when Mr. Kim allegedly entered the company, police said. The gunman allegedly walked into a specific room and shot the store's owner and another employee, police said. The employee died, and the owner underwent surgery at a local hospital, police said. The extent of his injuries were unclear late Wednesday, but Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano described him as "struggling and being treated right now."

The identities of victims were not released by authorities.

Police said Mr. Kim used a handgun, but did not provide details on the brand and caliber of the weapon. Police found no records indicating Mr. Kim had a license to carry a gun in the city or the state. Police did not recover a weapon at the scene.

"We are still digging into his relationship with this business," Mr. Skrynecki said, adding that it "seems to be over a bad business deal or an issue with a business deal that they were involved in."

Mr. Kim, dressed in a red shirt and gray or brown jacket, allegedly fled in his 2007 white Honda Pilot with the plate number FMA3648, law-enforcement sources said.

A manhunt involving local and state police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation had not located Mr. Kim as of Wednesday night, police said. The state police deployed resources to aid in the dragnet and neighboring departments in Suffolk County, Westchester County, New York City and New Jersey were called on to help, officials said.

"We're very confident he's not in this immediate area now," the chief said, adding, "We have nothing to suggest this individual is on a random shooting rampage."

Mr. Kim allegedly has a history with police, a law-enforcement official said. Neighbors at his Fresh Meadows apartment complex said he was a mostly quiet presence in the building.

Both the Roosevelt Field Mall and all schools in the Garden City district were placed on lockdown for several hours. Students and mall patrons were being kept inside their facilities, and all visitors were kept out, officials said. Streets around the incident were closed off.

Heavily armed special police units did a door-to-door search of businesses, but it became clear Mr. Kim had not remained in the area after the violence.

In the middle of the afternoon, the lockdown was lifted and each person leaving the mall was checked to ensure that the suspect did not slip past authorities, police said.

Shortly after 2 p.m., more than a dozen employees at businesses near the light store were allowed to leave. Some said they heard the gunshots.

Burt Grant, a lighting representative with Metro Area Sales, said he had a 12:30 meeting the light store. "If the meeting was earlier I would have been inside," he said.
