Ⅲ THE ETERNAL BUDDHA（無始無終の仏さま）
eternal：[adjective] continuing for ever and having no end
1 Common people believe that Buddha was born a prince and learned the way to Enlightenment as a mendicant; actually, Buddha has always existed in the world which is without beginning or end.
人びとはみな、仏は王子として生まれ、出家してさとりを得たのだと信じているけれども、実は仏と成ってよりこのかた、限りのない時を経ている。
mendicant：托鉢（乞食）、布施で生計・修行生活を行う者。「沙門」（Śramaṇa）という類似の用語があり、それはときとして「貧道」とも訳されます。
『法華経』「如来寿量品」「然るに、われは実に成仏してよりこのかた、久遠たることかくのごとし」。それを「久遠実成（くおん-じつじょう）」の仏と表現します。この理解は、阿弥陀さまにも適応されます。「久遠実成阿弥陀仏 五濁の凡愚をあはれみて 釈迦牟尼仏としめしてぞ 迦耶城には応現する」『諸経讃』
Buddha has always existed in the world which is without beginning or end.
have＋過去分詞（現在完了形）ここでは「継続（ずっと）～している」の意味
直訳：ブッダは、つねに始まりも終わりもなき世界に存在している。
As the Eternal Buddha, He has known all people and applied all methods of relief.
限りのない時の間、仏は常にこの世にあり、永遠の仏として、すべての人びとの性質を知り尽くし、あらゆる手段を尽くして救ってきた。
apply： [transitive] to use something such as a method, idea, or law in a particular situation, activity, or process
relief：[singular, uncountable] a feeling of comfort when something frightening, worrying, or painful has ended or has not happened
直訳：彼（釈尊）は、無始無終の仏さまとして、すべての人びと（の状態）を知り、安堵のためのあらゆる手段に専念している。
2 Buddha teaches not only through words, but also through His life. Although His life is endless, in order to awaken greedy people, He uses the expedient of death.
仏はただことばで教えるだけでなく、身をもって教える。仏は、その寿命に限りはないが、欲を貪って飽くことのない人びとを目覚ますために、手段として（expedient臨機の処置としての）死を示す。
awaken： [intransitive, transitive] to wake up or to make someone wake up
greedy： [adjective] always wanting more food, money, power, possessions etc than you need
この一節は、『法華経』「如来寿量品」「良医病子」の譬喩をうけての記述です。
