Ⅱ BUDDHA'S RELIEF AND SALVATION FOR US
第2節 救いと手立て
1. It is very difficult for the words spoken by Buddha from the far bank of Enlightenment to reach the people still struggling in the world of delusion; therefore Buddha returns to this world Himsely and uses His methods of salvation.
（前半部分の和文）さとりの岸に立って、迷いの海の沈んでいる人々に呼びかける仏のことばは、人々の耳には容易に聞こえない。（後半部分の和文）だから、仏は、自ら迷いの海に分け入って、救いの手段を講じた。
struggle：to experience difficulty and make a very great effort in order to do something:

（前半部分の直訳）さとりEnlightenmentの、遠き岸からブッダによって語られたことばwords（複数形。教えの意か）が、いまだ迷いdelusionの世界に喘いでいる人々に達することは、とても困難である。
Difficuiltとhardの違いについては、difficultは「知識」「技術」をともなう努力が必要であるのに対して、hardは「肉体的」「精神的」努力が必要と説明されます。またdifficultは「深刻な話題」、hardは「日常的な話題」で使われるそうです。

（後半部分の直訳）ですから、ブッダは自ら［の意志で］この世界に立ちもどり、彼れ［独自］の、救済の方策（すなわち、善巧方便）を用いられるのである。
如来（にょらい tathāgata）という語は、「如去」（さとりの世界tathāへと達したgata）、「如来」（さとりの世界より来たったāgata）との両用あるうち、後者、すなわち慈悲の活動を強調した表現です。『梵網経』下には「吾［は実にはるか昔に成道して、これまでに、そして］今［再び］此の世界に来たること八千返」という表現があります。Web版 新纂浄土宗大辞典「往来八千返」（執筆者：横田善教）参照。
