■松の廊下跡＜Edo Castle's Matsu No Rouka>
変な外人、戦国歴史おたくのクリス・グレンです。
先週、江戸城趾（皇居東御苑内）に行ってきました。
その中にあるのが「松の廊下跡」。
浅野内匠頭が吉良上野介を斬りつけた場所で有名ですね。
松の廊下は本丸で二番目に長い廊下。
西へ約１９メートル、北へ約３１メートル、幅は約５メートルあったそうです。
今は、石碑だけが残っています。
「松の廊下跡」があることを知らずに行くと、見逃しそうですね。
実際にあった場所は、現在こんな感じになっています。

The corridor was the 2nd longest in the Castle palace,
it was 5 meters wide, and ran 19m eastwards and 31 meters north.
It's historical importance lies in the fact that this was where
the Lord of Ako, Asano No Takumi attacked the protocol advisor,
Lord Kira Kozuke No Suke in 1701, leading to the 47 Ronin incident,
otherwise known as Chushingura!

■本能寺の跡【Site of Honno-Ji】

先週末、京都へ行ってきました。
メインは紅葉だったんだけど
観光地図で【本能寺】という名前を見つけて、これは「行かなくちゃ！」と
ドキドキ・ワクワク！
地図通りに行ってみたけど、消防署や学校があるだけで、なかなか見つからない。
と思っていたら、看板があった！Until I found the signpost...
歩いている人に聞いてみたけど「あぁ...あそこに石碑があるんじゃないかな？」
くらいな感じ。僕のドキドキ・ワクワクな気持ちとは、ずいぶん違う...
残っているのは石碑くらいしかないんだね...ちょっとガッカリ。
なぜ、こんなに有名＆歴史的に大切な場所に、何もないの？
せめて公園くらいにはなっていて欲しかった!!
歴史好きな僕としては、こんな風に建物がたってしまっても
ここに立っているだけで「あぁ...ここに信長がいたんだなぁ」
「どんな気持ちだったのかな」って考えるだけで、なんだか感動するけど
歴史に興味がない人たちが来ても「あぁ、ここってスゴい場所だったんだな」
と思ってもらえるようにはしておいて欲しいなぁ...と思う。
うーん、アメリカやイギリスだったら、こういう歴史的な場所は
かなり守られるんだけど...日本は、建物たてちゃうね～。
もったいなーい。

something that caught my eye, "Site of Honno-Ji!"
This is where the great Samurai War Lord
Oda Nobunaga was killed in 1582 by one of his generals
who had turned traitor! Surrounded and understaffed,
Nobunaga set fire to the temple and with his few followers
committed seppuku. Only the remains of his helmet was found
amongst the ashes days later.

While walking the area, I had asked a number of people for

せめて公園くらいにはなっていて欲しかった!!
Once again I'm left wondering why such an important historical site,
one revered by the Japanese for it's importance and acts of
samurai bravery, hasn't been preserved as a park, or have a
greater monument erected? Why has an old folks home been allowed
to be built here?

歴史好きな僕としては、こんな風に建物がたってしまっても
ここに立っているだけで「あぁ...ここに信長がいたんだなぁ」

と思ってもらえるようにはしておいて欲しいなぁ...と思う。
I felt both humbled and frustrated to know that Nobunaga had died on this spot.
At least with a bigger or better monument, even those with
little interest in Japanese history could appreciate the importance
of what occurred here.

うーん、アメリカやイギリスだったら、こういう歴史的な場所は
かなり守られるんだけど...日本は、建物たてちゃうね～。

I really don't think that building on such an important historical site would ever be permitted in the west. Would development be allowed on the birth place of George Washington? Or an old folks home be allowed on the site of
Sir Francis Drake's villa?

今度、京都に行ったら、今のこっている本能寺に行ってみようと
思っています。それも楽しみだ。
The Honno-Ji was re-built 10 years after in a different location.

いよいよ最後です。ラストは、シドニー市役所で行われた
名古屋市、シドニー市姉妹提携30周年記念レセプションでの
パフォーマンスです。
ウラで、最後の確認をしていると
市役所のスタッフが「写真をとりたい!!」と集まってきて
記念撮影がスタート。SAMURAI人気は、ココでもすごい（笑）
そして、僕たちのパフォーマンス。
オープニングセレモニーには出席できなかった、シドニー市長も
いらっしゃました。
最後に、みんなで勝鬨。
シドニー市長も、僕たちのパフォーマンスを喜んでくれたみたいです。
短い時間だったけど、濃い時間でした。
本当に楽しかった。
日本甲冑武者隊のメンバー＆スタッフのみなさん、お疲れさまでした！
海外でのイベント＆パフォーマンス、もっともっとやりたいなぁ～。
