What drives Japanese people to suicide?
Japan has one of the highest suicide rates especially among developed countries. According to inquiry by WHO, the number of suicides in Japan exceeded 30,000 in 2007. And what was even worse, adverse economic condition has pushed people to kill ourselves. I believe more efforts are required to decrease the numbers of suicides. Mainly we have the problems of hard working environment, cultural attitude about suicide and not sharing our weakness.
The hard working condition has lead to increase suicides. According to the OECD survey in 2005, Japan is in the third places in the long working hours following Korea, The United states. Japanese people works 17,85 hours weekly. In Korea, the number of suicides exceeds 30000 people too. Therefore, Japan government has to improve the working conditions, introducing work sharing, decreasing overtime works and .
Culture attitude about suicide has affected the increase of it in Japan. Since Heian Period, the samurai used to commit “seppuku”
to take a blame. “Seppuku” was an honorable way to die according to the samurai spirit. So some people still think that committing suicide is considered a way to take a responsibility. However we have to change the mind and eliminate the custom. We give second chance the people who made a mistake.
