それでは、賢治の代表作
「銀河鉄道の夜」の翻訳比較をしてみたい！
賢治の原文は基本的には、「新校本 宮沢賢治全集」（筑摩書房）に拠る。
冒頭の部分から見よう。
１．午后の授業
「ではみなさんは、さういふふうに川だと云はれたり、乳の流れたあとだと云はれたりしてゐたこのぼんやりと白いものがほんたうは何かご承知ですか。」先生は、黒板に吊した大きな黒い星座の図の、上から下へ白くけぶった銀河帯のやうなところを指しながら、みんなに問をかけました。

'So you see, boys and girls, that is why some have called it a river, while others see a giant trace left by a stream of milk. But does anyone know what really makes up this hazy-white region in the sky?'

"Well then, everybody, while it's been called a river or a leftover spill of milk, can you tell me if this pale white thing is in fact a river?" The teacher pointed to the whitish Milky Way zone stretching from top to bottom of the star map that hung over the blackboard.

パルバース訳のあとの二つの英訳は、いかにも学習者向けの感が強い。特に、後者はヒアリング重視の本だけに詩的感興は薄いのはやむを得ないかも。
講談社英語文庫（1977）からも引用しておこう。「Night Train to the Stars」ジョン・ベスター訳。

"Now then, boys, this vague white blur that, as I've just told you, people used to say was a river, or a "Milky Way"---do you know what it really is?"
As he put the question to the class, the teacher pointed to the smoky white part that stretched as a galactic band from top to bottom of the big black map of the constellations hung on the blackboard.

ここでは、先生が生徒たちに呼びかける言葉は、boys と男子に限定されていることで、おそらく当時のクラスでは女子生徒はいなかった可能性が高い（と推測される）ので、ムベなるかな。
「boys and girls」と訳したパルバース訳とは見解が異なるところかも。
「everybody」では、男女の区別がないけど、何だか呼びかけにしては叙述的な気もする。
単純に「you」とすればそのあたりの混同は避けられるかも知れない。
