KO OLINA, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - State Health Department officials have issued a public advisory for one of the lagoons at Ko Olina, saying there are high levels of a dangerous bacteria in the water.
Recent tests at the resort area's Kohala lagoon have revealed a "water quality exceedance" of a bacteria called enterococci, indicating a higher concentration of the bacteria than is advised.
Officials say contact with water in the lagoon may cause illness.
Certain types of the bacteria, according to the CDC, are resistant to antibiotics and other types of treatments. The disease can sometimes cause wound infections and urinary tract infections.
Health department officials say the health advisory will remain posted until water samples no longer result in unsafe levels.
