一昨昨日の夜のことだった。
京都に遊びに行って河原町のカフェでお茶をしていたら、
窓の方を向いて座っていた友人が、
筆者の話を遮って
「ア！！ トゥクトゥク！！！」
と叫んだので、すぐさま窓の外を見たが、
そんなものはない。
友人は 「もう行っちゃった！」 と言うが、
京都にトゥクトゥクなんか、ホントに走っているのだろうか。
疑った筆者は
「人力車をゥクトゥクと見間違っただけなんじゃないのか。」
と、まるで
”人力車が自動車と同じ速度で一般道を走り去ったのなら話はわかるが”
とでも言うかのような勢いで相手を責めたが、
友人は首を振り、誓ってトゥクトゥクだった、という。
翌日ネットで調べたら、走っていないこともないらしい。
京都に限らず全国的にチョコチョコ走っているという。
自分も友人と横に並んで窓の方を向いていれば良かったなあ、
と思う。

Three nights ago, I was in a cafe on Kawaramachi Ave.
chatting with a friend.
My friend was facing the window while I was seated with my back to it.
I was saying something very unimportant, when she suddenly interrupted me
exclaiming,
"Whoa! It's a tuk-tuk!!"
I immediately turned around, but saw nothing of that kind.
"It's gone!"
she said, but I doubted the possibly of any tuk-tuk running
around downtown Kyoto.
So, I challenged her;
"Are your sure it wasn't a rikshaw??"
as if a rikshaw running on a roadway at 40km/h or faster
keeping up with traffic made sense.
But she shook her head and said with absolute certainty that
it had been a tuk-tuk.
After some Internet research the next day, I came to know
that it had indeed been a tuk-tuk.
Actually, it turned out that there are quite a few tuk-tuks
in operation throughout this country.
I wish I was also facing the window that night.
