Eiken:Admission system, American or Japanese?

Which admission system do you think is better, American style or traditional Japanese style?

I understand that many criticize paper exams as narrow-minded and sometimes pointless, especially when I see my son memorize vocabulary from classic Japanese literature or chemistry equations that don’t interest him at all. It is even said that Japan’s poor work environment and the phenomenon of "corporate slaves" are due to cramming irrelevant knowledge for pointless and passive paper tests. However, in 2023, the percentage of holistic entrance exams, such as the AO exam, has surpassed traditional paper exams in Japanese universities. I think the current percentage of American-style and traditional Japanese-style admissions is well balanced, and I don’t think we need a growing number of holistic entrance exams for the following three reasons.

First, standardized tests help diversity. Now prestigious universities in the U.S., which once stopped considering standardized test scores, such as the SAT, have restarted using them because paper-based tests can attract a diverse range of students. Research has shown that personal experiences often depend on students’ family income. In the U.S., without proper clubs or extracurricular activities, academic performance and involvement outside of studies play a crucial role in university admissions, meaning economic power has a significant influence. Additionally, some students may be ill but can score well on tests. Students who might struggle with communication or have less appealing appearances can still perform well on tests. Only rich, active, and outgoing students may have an advantage in American-style admissions.

Moreover, academic competition is considered fairer with traditional exams. For example, my son spent most of his middle school years in an international school abroad, where he participated in the International Baccalaureate MYP program. While it was an excellent curriculum that promoted practical skills, critical thinking, and creativity, the grading was difficult, and high scores could only be achieved with favorable teacher relationships. My son excelled in math but struggled with communication, which negatively impacted his grades. He felt that the Japanese university entrance exams were fairer and, at his request, returned to Japan.

Last but not least, traditional Japanese admissions that require a higher level of math and science are crucial for the rigorous development of the Japanese economy. The level of math required for admission to top-tier universities in Western countries is reportedly easier compared to that of Japan’s prestigious universities. To gain admission, basic math skills are sufficient, while academic performance, sports achievements, and volunteer activities become more significant. While well-rounded individuals are suitable for leadership roles, it’s essential to recognize that Western countries are actively accepting talented STEM professionals from India and Asia as immigrants. Japan, which is not as proactive in accepting immigrants, must produce its own skilled STEM talent, making it inappropriate to entirely mimic the American system.

To increase diversity, to create fairer competition, and not to slow down the Japanese economy, I cannot agree to further reduce traditional entrance exams.
