Connecting with fellow cancer patients
Hello,
It has been five days since my salvage surgery for lung cancer. Today was the day when all of my drains (tubes) were finally removed, and I feel much lighter.
The pain has eased considerably, and I now have the energy to reach out to my company and friends.
Since the hospital I am staying in specializes in cancer, all the patients here are cancer patients. During my stay, I have had many opportunities to talk with different people. We shared stories about what type of cancer we have and how it was discovered. I realized that the information gained through these patient-to-patient exchanges could also be useful for healthy people.
1: Stomach cancer
This person was initially diagnosed with a stomach ulcer during a routine medical checkup but left it untreated for about six months. Later, after suffering from severe stomach pain for three days, they underwent a gastroscopy, which revealed stomach cancer. They were told that the cancer had developed from a large amount of Helicobacter pylori bacteria. Until then, they had always been healthy, except that they ate very quickly.
2: Breast cancer
This person regularly performed self-examinations and one day noticed a small lump. A mammogram did not detect it, and tumor markers were also negative, but a cytology test confirmed it was cancer. They mentioned that the lump was located just above the nipple, a spot many people tend to overlook. They also advised that checking during a bath with soap makes it easier to detect changes. Like the first patient, they had been perfectly healthy until this diagnosis.
3: Pancreatic cancer
This was discovered incidentally during an ultrasound performed at a routine health checkup.
4: Breast cancer (not recurrence, but a new primary cancer)
This person had previously undergone a mastectomy for breast cancer. For five years, there was no recurrence, and even a CT scan six months ago showed no metastasis, so they were declared in remission. However, half a year later, the opposite breast suddenly became painful, and a lump appeared rapidly. An urgent examination revealed not a recurrence, but a new primary breast cancer.
