Hello, I was discharged from the hospital on August 22, 2025. It's been 12 days since I had my salvage surgery, and I'm now able to get by taking pain medication only once a day.

Two day before my scheduled discharge, I had an unexplained fever and felt lethargic, which delayed my discharge by one day. Other than that, my recovery has been smooth.

However, I still feel a sense of unease, as if my body is different from before. I'm experiencing shortness of breath and a frequent dry cough. Also, when I sit for a long time, I feel a dull ache from my lungs to my back. I wonder if these symptoms will gradually improve.

A month from the first symptoms to a diagnosis

It took a month from the onset of my symptoms to get a diagnosis. After finding out I had cancer in January 2025, I took antibiotics for a week to treat pneumonia. I then had a PET CT and an MRI. Following that, I was admitted to the hospital for a 3-day stay to undergo a bronchoscopy. I actually had two bronchoscopies. The first one was at a local hospital, but they weren't able to collect any cancer cells. The hospital told me they couldn't handle my case anymore and wrote a referral letter for me to transfer to a large, specialized cancer hospital.

After transferring to the cancer center, I had another bronchoscopy. This time, the procedure was done as a same-day outpatient visit and was very smooth. They successfully collected cancer cells and were able to identify the type of cancer. This experience made me realize how crucial it is to choose the right hospital, as there can be a big difference in the quality of medical care and technology.

The final diagnosis was made on February 25th: I was diagnosed with non-small cell lung cancer, adenocarcinoma, with an EGFR gene mutation, Stage 4. Since surgery was not an option, the plan was to proceed with chemotherapy. The prescribed drug was Osimertinib (commonly known as Tagrisso).

Two days after the diagnosis, starting on February 28th, I was admitted for a one-week hospital stay to begin taking Tagrisso. It was also around this time that I was told I had about six months to live if I didn't start treatment.

While I took a one-month leave of absence from work starting in March.
