Last time I "studied" English was when I was an ESL student back in Hamilton about seven month ago.
I think it is not only me think this way, if you throw yourself into absolute English environments, you will pick up the language. that was exactly what I thought. nah, the reality is not simple as that.
I've been a college student for about eight months now, do I speak English like Canadians? hell no, it's way far from that. and I am not likely to reach where Im hoping to get any time soon. am i not talented? yeah maybe, however, I don't think I'm slucking off too much, I took interviews and got a job that will probably require a lot of communication esp on the phone. this proves me not bad either. despite all I went through, I still mistake a lot, Im even afraid of making mistakes when i talk with them.
the truth is, i don't want it anymore, i want to understand everything what they say, i want to convey how i feel as precisely as possible. with having knowing it won't be easy. i put a little effort day by day for my English.
writing this is part of it, but when I want to practice speaking, I use dvds of half an hour shows, how i use this is pretty simple, put subtitles on, speak it out along the subtitles. I think many English learners have done this. I like it and believe this is gonna work, you will know how difficult it is to keep up with speakers on the tv even though you are reading it.
I only have a few weeks until my work starts, and I feel responsible for being chosen for the position. I want to avoid miscommunication as much as i can. that is why I keep doing this.
Redsox was swept by Jays, oh man
Went to see a ball game!
especially, game like today, last season's champian Boston Redsox playing in can be so exciting.
in lastnight's game, Bluejay's won by 3 to 5, but I doubted them winning two games in a row against the champion.
However, the game turned out to be a one-side game despite Redsox scoring in first inning, the game ends up with 10 to 2 for Bluejays, I did not expect this score expecially bluejays against Redsox, I was hoping to see a game like last night, but the otherway around, I could have seen Okajima piching. it was a little dissapoint.
There are about ten people who never watched a bassball game, they are from France, Finland, Singapore, Germany and Australia. well, and here I am Japan also a couple of Canadians.
it was great meeting with them from all over the world, they go to Waterloo university, and they live in a residense where most students are international students like us, whereas my residense where 95% are Canadians. I wish I lived there, would have been so much fun. well, can't complain, our college is just a small college in a small city.
I met a guy who were born here but he has japanese grand parents, he doesnt speak a word of japanese, but he still seems interested in knowing about japan. I hope to catch up with him after today.

Things doesn't go as easy as I hope or predict,
ever since I came to Canada, I get depressed once in a while. just a little thing that wouldn't be anything matters if i were in Japan can be something really different here.
the otherday, I asked one of my friend for a baseball game this saturday, she said " yeah that sounds exciting, I want to go but I have previous engagement, but I ask if I can push it to Sunday instead"
So, I didn't expect anything like I was going to face after this conversation. after a while, she got back to me, and say, "hey I'm sorry I don't think I can make it" so, I go, "oh, no problem, I'll let you know if somethingelse comes up" and yeah, here's thing. then, she suddenly broaches, "I can't go out with you anymore"
I was like ???, what is wrong? well the thing is, she now belongs to who she was with before, yeah her ex-.
she told me, that me asking her out kinda making him nervous kinda thing,
but, I never knew you back with your boyfriend, why didn't you tell me, plus, you are the one wanted me to ask if anything going on, I wanna join. so I never personally asked her out, its always with my friends. why am i feeling like dumped??? and her boyfriend and his friends kinda ignores me now.
did I do anything wrong? seriously, I hate this thing happening to me. give mea break.
if you want to stay away from troubles, do not get involved.
Texas Hold'em
I'm playing it almost everynight with five, six guys. my first time was the begining of this semester. I always was interested, but I was not sure how to play. it's poker, but I think its different from what we japanese know as poker. you only have two cards on your hands instead of five. you know why? think of a situation which let's say six people are at the the table playing poker, if five cards are dealt for each one, that leaves only 54 - 30 = 24 cards. after first cards are dealt, players need to change their cards to draw a hand, but there are only 24 cards left. depending on the situation, but there might be a case in which all players can not change their cards.
So, we play with two cards, how this works is after two cards are dealt for each player, they make a bet, after everybody make their bet, only three cards, with which you can match up your two cards will be shown for every player. after this, each player make their bet again, each player can either "ckeck", "fold", and "raise". check means no action, fold means you are getting off the session you are currently playing in, and raise means you bet more chips for the session.
after the three cards is dealt, each player has two more opportunities to raise the pot. each player also can fold if you assume other players have better hands than yours. the each time a new card is shown to players. So total cards are five, players match up their two cards with those five cards to make a hand. you need to carefully observe other players, if they have better hands than you or not. you can not be predictable, you have to have "poker face".
This game requires more than you ever think it does if you have never played it. that's why people are so absorbed in it.
at certain degree, I see similarity with mah-jong in poker. however, poker is less complex, fewer hands, thus, it is easier for anyone to learn. in exchange, players are required more insight be able to anticipate opponents hands.
I don't know why it is not popular in Japan, I never played it in Japan I believe nether do most people.
I want to play after coming back to Japan!

Communication at work
Ojibwe language and culture
Server Administration
Server Configuration
TCP/IP
The semester leaves only two weeks to go....
How fast time is passing by, it maight have felt even faster if all snow melted away and it brought warmer temperatures. unfortunatly the weather is groomy today, I'm staying home a little depressed by that.
So far, I had five courses this semester, I was exempted from one course, which focuses on Cisco CCNA certificate, because I have it.
The five courses are Communication at work, Ojibwe language and culture 2, Server administration, Server configuration and TCP/IP.
Communication at work is focused on any communication methods used in work environments which includes e-mails, meetings, research reports and resumes. although my writing skills has improved, I still make lots and lots of mistakes when i write. So, I am not really good at keeping good marks for this course.
Ojibwe language and culture 2 is studying about aboriginal people in canada especially around Ontario. the teacher is a bit lazy though, he I think is not passionated about teaching much. I'm taking this just because he gives marks without us doing not much.
Server Administration is focused on microsoft windows server 2003, Im not sure what defferentiate this from the other one.
Server Configuration is same as Server administration, these two actually focus on certificate of microsoft. I'm looking to get it after this semester.
TCP/IP is not only focused on TCP/IP, it covers broad network areas, from IP address calculations to various servers and routing protocols. it doesn't really specialize in anything, its like a recap of networking.
I find Server configuration most interesting and beneficial for my future career, my purpose of staying dean's list from the last semester is likely accomplished as long as I won't do bad on the final exams.
