The source article for March 27, 1993, CIA briefing states that the incident is based on a 250-page file obtained by the intelligence agency shortly after the dissolution of the Soviet Union—which occurred under Mikhail Gorbachev in 1991. There, a singular Russian military defeat is recounted and evidenced, with photos and interviews with the survivors included.
According to materials captured by the then KGB, the fight between Russian troops and alien creatures began when a low-flying UFO appeared in the middle of a routine military training exercise. This apparent unexpected surveillance by a UFO caused one of the soldiers to recklessly launch a surface-to-air missile that hit the object, bringing it down not far from where they were gathered.
