Always so kind and cheerful
長嶋茂雄さんの御逝去の報に接し、謹んでお悔やみを申しあげますとともに、心よりご冥福をお祈り申し上げます。
長嶋監督には、子どもの頃から大変お世話になりました。
遡れば、私が小学校高学年の頃、地元宮崎の知人を介して宮崎キャンプに来ていた長嶋監督にお招きいただき、食事をご一緒させていただき、初めてお会いすることになりました。
目の前に現れた長嶋さんはとても気さくで優しく、子どもながらこの人はすごいと感動し、ご一緒させていただいたあの日の喜びは今もはっきりと憶えています。
長嶋監督の選手時代を私はリアルタイムで拝見したわけではありませんが、映像等で見ると、天覧試合で劇的なサヨナラホームランを打たれた姿、巨人軍のV９を王貞治さんをはじめチームメイトの方々と達成された姿など、どんな場面であっても、ここ一番というところにおいて力を発揮する姿はまさに大スターだったと思います。
また、ファンの方をとても大切にされ、楽しませることを常に第一に考えられていたと思います。華やかな送球フォームや、印象に残るフレーズを使って楽しませるインタビューなどに、いつも誰かを喜ばせていたと思います。そういったところに私も学ばせていただくところが多々ありました。
思い出はいくつもありますが、私が2000年シドニーオリンピックで金メダルを獲得したときに、スポーツ報知さんも大きく報じてくださったのですが、このときちょうど長嶋監督率いる巨人軍も優勝が決まろうとしているときだったとのことで、長嶋監督が「井上くんに紙面を譲ってくれ」と言ってくださったという事がありました。本当にありがたいことですし、あたたかい心をお持ちの本当にお優しい方でした。
食事に行ってもいつもいろいろな話をしていただきましたし、自らわれわれに料理をよそって、食事を楽しむ気遣いをしてくださいました。あれだけの大スターが細やかな気遣いをされ、そんなことまでしてくださるということに私はいつも感動していました。
振り返ると思い出は尽きません。
長い闘病生活、本当にお疲れ様でした。
どうかゆっくりとお休みください。

Mr.NAGASHIMA Shigeo
On hearing of the passing of NAGASHIMA Shigeo I would like to express my deepest condolences and pray that his soul may rest in peace.
Coach NAGASHIMA was someone I have looked up to ever since I was a child.
Back in the day when I was in upper elementary school, I had a chance to have dinner with him through an acquaintance, while he was down in Miyazaki for a training camp .That was the first time I met him.
The man who stood before me was so kind and gentle. Even as a child I recognized how great he was. I can still clearly remember now the joy of that day.
I didn’t see Coach NAGASHIMA during his years as a player however having seen footage of his dramatic walk-off home run at Tenran, the match attended by the Emperor, or the manner in which he and his team mate OH Sadaharu achieved the Giants’ V9 he was such a class act able to shine and prove himself to be the best in any situation.
His fans were also of great importance to him, I believe he constantly strived to give them maximum enjoyment. Whether it was flamboyant throws or memorable phrases during interviews for the fans’ enjoyment, he always wanted to bring joy to people. I learned so much from his ways in this respect.
I have numerous memories of times with him but one in particular was at the 2000 Sydney Olympics when I won a gold medal. It was reported extensively in the media and it was right about the time when the Giants were poised to win when Coach NAGASHIMA said ‘Give the front page to young Inoue.’ I was so grateful for that, such a kind man with a warm heart.
Whenever we ate together, he would tell me so many stories and serve food to everyone making the experience enjoyable for everyone all. To have such a huge star make such an effort on our behalf was something which always impressed me.
Looking back, the memories are endless.
After such a long struggle against illness I hope you can now rest in peace.
