４月29日には全日本選手権が開催されました。
今大会にはパリ五輪代表は出場しませんでしたが、各地区の代表が全日本の舞台に集い、見応えある試合を展開してくれました。
初優勝した中野寛太は、高校時代から逸材と注目されてきましたが、ここ数年はなかなか突き抜けた結果を出せずに苦しんでいたと思います。もともと足技、担ぎ技などの多彩な技の持ち主でしたが今回はそこに地力も加わってきているように感じました。
今大会の結果で自信を得たと思いますし、優勝インタビューではロス五輪を目指したいとも話していました。これからの成長に期待したいと思います。
他にも若い世代の台頭がありました。
初の準決勝進出となったグリーンカラニ海斗は、彼らしいアグレッシブな柔道で会場を沸かしていましたし、90kg級の川端倖明は２回戦で敗れたものの、次に期待の持てる試合をしていたのではないかと思いました。
ベテランも存在感を見せてくれました。特に準優勝の原沢久喜、準決勝で敗れた王子谷剛志、３回戦で敗退となった羽賀龍之介のことは、特別な感慨を持って見ていました。
３人は私が全日本のコーチや監督をしていたときにともに世界で戦った選手であり、いずれも全日本王者です。
今大会はこれまでの経験をすべてぶつけるつもりで試合場に上がっていたと思いますし、若手の挑戦を受けて立つ姿には胸が熱くなりました。
３人が登場すると会場からは一際大きな歓声が贈られていました。その声援を聞きながら彼らのファンが多い事を改めて感じましたし、彼らの実績はもちろんのこと、柔道に対する姿勢が多くの人の支持を集めるのだと実感しました。
今大会も選手たちはそれぞれの柔道を貫くことで全日本という舞台の素晴らしさを感じさせてくれたと思います。選手の皆さん、お疲れ様でした。
Takeaways from The All Japan Judo Championships.
The All Japan Judo Championships were held on April 29th.
Team members for the Paris Olympics and the World Championships were absent however representatives from all corners of Japan came together and showed us some very worthwhile matches.
It was a first win for NAKANO Kanta. Noticed as having talent since high school, frustratingly in recent years he has been unable to achieve any good results.
Originally, he adopted a variety of skills including footwork and carrying techniques however this time I feel he was able to add to that his own inherent strength.
His result this time round will have given him some extra confidence. In an interview after the competition, he mentioned his goal of working toward the LA Olympics. I am excited to see how he will progress.
There were some rising stars among the younger athletes too.
GREEN Kaito who made it to the semi-finals for the first time showed us some of his own aggressive style and in the 90kg category KAWABATA got knocked out in the second match but judging by his performance he shows a lot of promise.
The more experienced athletes also made themselves known particularly HARASAWA Hisayoshi knocked out in the final and OJITANI Takeshi knocked out in the semi-finals. It was especially emotional to see HAGA Ryunosuke knocked out in the third match.
All three of them were on the national team when I was coaching and have fought at international level. All three of them are national heroes.
They came into the competition with the intention of giving it their all and it fired me up to see them take on the challenge of younger opponents.
When they entered the venue they were given a rousing applause. Listening to the cheers reaffirmed just how many fans they have, not to mention the number of achievements they have accrued I realised their attitude towards judo is part of the attraction for so many people.
Each bringing with them their own style of judo is what made the splendour this All Japan Championships all the more special.
