９月19〜10月８日まで中国・杭州でアジア競技大会が行われ、私は日本選手団副団長として参加してきました。選手団役員としての参加は初めてでしたが、大変多くの学びを頂く時間となりました。お力添えを頂いた尾縣貢団長、水鳥寿思副団長、谷本歩実副団長をはじめとする日本選手団の皆さん、JOCの方々、関係各位に御礼を申しあげます。
また、主催者の中国組織委員会の皆さんにも大変お世話になりました。最新のテクノロジーを駆使した大会運営とボランティアの方々のホスピタリティは素晴らしいものだったと思います。有り難うございました。
今大会は、アジア45カ国・地域が参加して40競技481種目が行われ、日本は総メダル獲得数ランキングで中国、韓国に次ぐ３位という結果となりました。
印象に残ったのは383個のメダルを獲得した中国の力の入れ様です。自国開催の大会で何として何としてでも結果を出すという猛烈な意気込みを感じました。
また、４位に入ったインドや５位のウズベキスタンなどメダル獲得数を伸ばした国もあり、アジアの勢力図が変わりつつあるとも感じました。
今大会は１年間延期され、かつ、パリ五輪１年前ということもあり、パリ五輪の予選となっている種目も多くありました。出場資格を獲得した競技も、残念ながらそうでなかった競技もありますが、皆さん、精一杯のパフォーマンスを発揮されていたのではないかと思います。
大会全体を見渡すと、カバディやクラッシュなどアジア発祥のスポーツ、囲碁やチェスなどのマインドスポーツなどが実施され、アジア大会ならではの特色が存分に現れていたと思います。
また、今大会、eスポーツが初めて実施されたことも特筆すべき事かもしれません。BMXやクライミングなどのXスポーツ、ブレイキンやローラースケートなどのアーバンスポーツと言われる競技もすでに定着した感がありますし、スポーツの定義が非常に幅広くなっていることを感じます。
ただ、定義は変わろうともスポーツの価値は変わらない事も確認できました。選手が己の力を最大限発揮しようと試合に臨む姿や、試合後、勝敗を超えて互いを讃え合う姿を見ていると、国を超えて人々が一体になるのを感じられるのはスポーツを置いて他にないと思うからです。この事を大会を通じて強く感じました。
いよいよ来年はパリ五輪、そして2026年には愛知・名古屋でアジア大会が開かれます。

Report on the Asian Games
The Asian Games took place in Hangzhou, China from September 19th to October 8th and I participated as vice leader of Team Japan.
It was my first time to take part as an official, but it was very educational.
I would like to express my gratitude to the other members of the team, including President OGATA Mitsugi, Vice-team leaders MIZUTORI Hisashi and TANIMOTO Ayumi, and the members of the JOC.
I’d also like to say a big thank you to the Chinese Organizing Committee. Both the management of the tournament using the latest technology and the welcoming hospitality of the volunteers made it a wonderful event.
In the medals Japan ranked 3rd overall behind China and Korea in a competition which saw athletes compete from 45 nations in 40 sports and in 481 events.
I was greatly impressed by China’s effort which gained them 383 medals. I felt they had a huge determination to win particularly as the games were held in their home country. India which came in 4th pace and Uzbekistan in 5th both increased their medal count, giving a sense that the balance of power in Asia is changing.
Due to the competition being postponed for a year and with just one year to go until the Paris Olympics, the games became qualifiers in many sports. Despite everyone giving their best performance there were some sports in which we qualified and others in which we didn’t.
Looking at the tournament as a whole you notice a number of sports which originated in Asia such as kabaddi and kurash as well as mind sports like Go and chess displaying the unique characteristics of the Asian Games.
It is also worth mentioning that e-sports were included for the very first time too.
The definition of sport is certainly broadening with the inclusion of X sports like BMX and climbing and urban sports like breakdancing and roller-skating which have already firmly taken root.
I also noted that even if the definition of sport is broadening its intrinsic value is still upheld. Right throughout the tournament I watched athletes giving their best performances and congratulating each other whether they won or lost. I don’t think there is anything else like it in terms of bringing people together across country lines.
The Paris Olympics are being held next year, then in 2026 the Asian Games will be held in Nagoya. Please offer up your support to Team Japan!
