ワルシャワ滞在3日目。
今日もたくさんの出会いがありました。
元気な子どもたちに会ったのはワルシャワ日本人学校。
皆さんの前で、講話をさせていただいたのですが、
真剣なまなざしで聞いてくださいました。

また、ポーランド・オリンピック委員会では再会が。
ヨーロッパ柔道のレジェンドであり、ポーランドの国民的英雄、
パウエル・ナツラさんとお会いしました。
ナツラさんは1996年アトランタ五輪95kg級金メダリスト。
柔道選手引退後は、総合格闘技でも活躍し、
現在はワルシャワ市内で柔道クラブを経営され、選手育成にあたっておられます。
私も現役選手時代に何度も対戦、常に意識する選手の一人でもありました。
選手引退後に、このようにナツラさんの母国で再会できたことは
大変嬉しく、感激しました。

また、在ポーランド日本国大使館へもうかがい、
心あたたまるおもてなしを受けました。
身に余る光栄で、大変感動しました。
今回のポーランド訪問では、
たくさんの方に大変お世話になりました。

New Faces and a Familiar Face
This was my 3rd day in Warsaw.
Once again, I met a lot of new people today.
At The Japanese School in Warsaw, I met lots of cheerful children.
I gave a lecture and everyone listened with such keen ears.
I also saw a familiar face at the Poland Olympic Committee meeting.
I was reunited with the European Judo legend and Poland’s national hero, Pawel Nastula.
Mr. Nastula was the 1996 Atlanta Olympics 95 kg weight class gold medalist.
Since retiring as an athlete, he has been active in the mixed martial arts world and is currently running a judo club in Warsaw city, where he is training judo athletes.
I faced him in several matches during my athlete days. He was always an opponent to be reckoned with.
Since we’ve both retired as athletes, to be able to see Mr. Nastura again in his home country was truly an emotional experience.
I also went to the Japanese Embassy in Poland and was once again met with a very warm welcome.
It was an overwhelming honor to be there. I was very touched.
I am in debt to so many people after my trip to Poland.
