先日、柔道家の大先輩であり、
人生の大先輩である
金川千尋・信越化学工業（株）代表取締役会長にお会いしました。
信越化学工業を塩化ビニル樹脂（塩ビ）や半導体シリコンウエハーの
世界シェアナンバー1企業に育てあげられた金川会長は、
国内外で広くその名を知られた企業経営者で
長年にわたり第一線でご活躍されています。
私は全日本監督として、また、
一人の柔道家として応援いただいており、
2016年に発足した私の後援会では、
名誉会長にご就任いただき大変お世話になっております。
このようなご縁から、折に触れてお目にかかり、
沢山のことを学ばせていただいています。
今回もユーモアを交えながら、示唆に富むお話を
たっぷりしていただきました。
なかでも今回、特に印象に残ったエピソードが、
「時間を生かす」という発想です。
世界トップであり続けるためには、
時間の使い方が非常に重要で、
どんな時間でも有効に使うようにしている、ということでした。
その実践例としてあげられたのが朝の出勤時の電話です。
毎朝、車内でアメリカのシンテック社からの報告を電話で受け、
日々刻々と変わる塩ビの市況動向をとらえた上で、具体的な指示を出されているとのことです。
これをもう４０年も毎日、続けられ、今日に至っているというのです。
これには感銘を受けました。
金川会長はさらりとお話しされていたのですが、毎日というのはやはり
並大抵のことではできないと思います。
大きなことを成し遂げるためには、
日々の小さな積み重ねなくしてはありえない。
このことを改めて教えられたエピソードでした。
ほかにも、健康の秘訣や、
1964年の東京五輪での柔道の試合の思い出なども
ユーモアたっぷりにお話しいただきました。
こういうお話をうかがうのもとても楽しく、
厳しい企業戦士とはまた違う、おおらかでお優しいお人柄にも触れることとなり、
私自身、心和むとても有意義な時間となりました。
なお、今回も、
廣田幹人・新潟綜合警備保障代表取締役社長と、
秋本俊哉・信越化学工業常務取締役に同席いただきました。
お二人には、いつも温かく見守っていただき、
私の活動についてご理解ご支援をいただいております。

My time with Chairman Chihiro Kanagawa
The other day I met with my mentor in judo and life, Chihiro Kanagawa,
the chairman and executive director of Shin-Etsu Chemical Co., Ltd.
Chairman Kanagawa has led Shin-Etsu Chemical
to become the No. 1 share company of vinyl chloride resin (polyvinyl chloride)
and semiconductor silicon wafer in the world and has held a leading role
in the management of a long-standing company whose name is known across the world.
He has supported me as the All Japan Men's Strengthening Team Director as well as a judoka,
and he has continued to support me as the chairman of my supporters association that was started in 2016.
I try to make the best of my relationship with him,
learning everything I can from him every chance I get.
As usual, he brought his humor and thought provoking ideas to the conversation.
One that especially drew my attention was his idea of making good use of time.
According to Chairman Kanagawa, if you want to remain the best in the world,
the way you use your time is extremely important and you should make efficient use of any and all time you have.
He gave me an example about using the phone on the way to work in the mornings.
Every morning, he gets information from Syntek in the U.S. via his phone so he can have a firm grasp on the ever-changing vinyl chloride market conditions.
He has done this every day for the past 40 years.
I was very impressed when I heard this.
Chairman Kanagawa talked of this as if it was no big deal,
but I think that “every single day” is something that the average person would struggle with.
“It's impossible to achieve great things without working little by little every day.”
His story reminded me of this truth.
He also told me of several secrets to a healthy body,
as well as humorous stories about judo matches in the 1964 Olympics.
Having a conversation with such a ruthless businessman
and getting to see his soft side soothed my heart and was very meaningful time spent.
Furthermore, Mikihito Hirota, the president and director of Niigata Sohgo Security Services,
and Toshiya Akimoto, the managing director at Shin-Etsu Chemical, were there this time too.
The two of them always watch over me as well as follow and support all of my activities.
I want to take this chance to thank them once again.
