昨日はハワイの柔道交流について報告しましたが、
今は、フランスのパリに来ています。
今週末に開かれる
グランドスラム・パリに日本チームが出場するためです。
このグランドスラムという大会は、
国際柔道連盟が主催する、ワールドツアー大会の一つです。
ヨーロッパでは主に2月から3月にかけて様々なカテゴリーの大会が行われます。
毎年この時期に開催されている恒例の大会で、
世界の柔道の冬の風物詩的存在でもあります。
私も選手時代、大会名は違いましたが、
毎年、この時期は極寒のヨーロッパに来て試合に出場していました。
現在、このワールドツアー大会は、
世界ランキングポイントを獲得するためにも欠かせない大会です。
日本はその年のメインターゲットの大会の代表選考対象にしているため、
とても重要な位置付けです。
今年は8月の世界選手権、
9月のアジア競技大会の代表選考の対象となっており、
選手たちはここで結果を出さなければ、
代表の座に着くことは非常に厳しいのです。
インターネットなどで一部の試合は観戦できますから、
ぜひ注目して下さい！！
また、来週以降も続々と大会が行われます。

The Paris Grand Slam is This Weekend
Yesterday, I wrote about my time in Hawaii,
but I'm actually in Paris, France right now.
I'm here for the Japan team that is going to participate in the Paris Grand Slam this weekend.
The Grand Slam is one of the World Tour Tournaments put together by the International Judo Federation.
Particularly in February and March, there are several categories of tournaments held in Europe.
This is a tournament customarily held every year around this time and is somewhat of a reminder to everyone in the judo world that the winter season has come.
During my athlete days, although the tournament had a different name,
I too came to Europe every year in this overbearingly cold season to compete.
Nowadays, this World Tour Tournament is essential to scoring points for the world ranking.
The Japan team uses this to make its selection of athletes to compete in the main target of each year, so it's an extremely important ranking.
This year's targets are the World Championships in August and the Asian Games in September, so if athletes don't produce good results here, they will have an extremely difficult time getting a place in these tournaments.
