12月2、3日、東京体育館で
グランドスラム東京が行われました。
会場となった東京体育館は、
2日間ともほぼ満員！
たくさんのご声援、ありがとうございました！
おかげさまで日本男子代表は、7階級に28選手が出場し、
5選手が優勝という結果を収めることができました。
本当にありがとうございました。
前回のブログでも紹介しましたが、
今年は新たな試みとして、今年の夏の世界選手権で優勝した選手が
このグランドスラム東京でも優勝した場合、
来年の世界選手権の代表に内定するという規定を設けました。
この規定にのっとり、
今大会で優勝した
60kg級の髙藤直寿と
66kg級の阿部一二三の二人の世界チャンピオンが、
来年のバクー世界選手権代表に内定しました。
全日本柔道連盟として
早期内定制度の採用は初めてのことで、
制度を決めた春先には、
どのような結果となるか想像がつかなかったというのが正直なところです。
しかし1年を終えみて思うことは、勝負の厳しさと難しさであります。
内定資格を得るチャンスは他に
73kg級の橋本壮市と
100kg級のウルフ・アロンにもありましたが、
橋本は準決勝敗退、ウルフはケガで欠場。
両者はこのチャンスを生かすことはできませんでした。
世界選手権からグランドスラム東京まで
約3カ月間しかありませんでしたから、
この期間にコンディションを整え、
最良の準備をして試合に出場し、尚且つ優勝する、
ということは、やはり並大抵のことではないのです。
そういう意味で髙藤と阿部は、
今回の内定獲得によって、
世界チャンピオンとしての実力を
証明したとも言えます。
2人は、来年9月のバクー世界選手権まで
新しいことに挑戦しながら強化を進めていきます。
いまのところ、
年明け早々に、まず阿部が単独で遠征することが決まっています。
世界選手権までの時間を有効に使えるよう、
柔軟な発想で
全日本強化チームとして、全力でサポートしていきたいと思っています。

The Tokyo Grand Slam took place at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium on December 2nd and 3rd.

Thanks to your support, of the 28 athletes from the Japan men's team who participated in 7 different weight classes,
5 athletes came out on top in their divisions.

I mentioned it in my previous blog as well, but we made a new rule this year that those athletes who win first in the summer championships and the Grand Slam Tokyo competition as well will automatically represent Japan in next year's championships.
According to this new rule, two of our world champions who just took first in this competition,
Naohisa Takato of the 60kg weight division and
Hifumi Abe of the 66kg division, will be representing us in next year's Baku World Championships.
Quite honestly, since this is the first time for the All Japan Judo Federation to adopt an early championship decision rule,
we had no idea how it would turn out when the rule was made in early spring.
However, after finishing off the year, I thought the matches were really intense and challenging.
Soichi Hashimoto of the 73kg division and Aaron Wolf of the 100kg division also had the chance to be eligible for an early entrance to the team,
but Hashimoto was defeated in the semi-finals and Wolf was unable to compete due to an injury.
The two of them were unfortunately unable to take advantage of this chance.
There are only 3 months between the world championships and Tokyo Grand Slam, meaning that to maintain your condition,
make the best preparations, enter the tournament, and above all else, take first again in such a short time is no easy feat.
In this sense, you can say that Takato and Abe really proved their worth as world champions by earning an early entrance into next year's team.
The two of them will surely continue to improve their skills while attacking new challenges up until the Baku World Championships next September.
First things first though, Abe is going to go on an expedition alone early in the new year.
I plan to make the best of our time until the world championships with creative ideas and to back the Japan team with everything I've got.
