スポーツを通じた社会貢献を考えるとき、
まず私の頭の中に浮かぶのは、
恩師である山下泰裕先生が運営されている、
ＮＰＯ法人柔道教育ソリダリティーの活動です。
山下先生と事務局のみなさんにより、
世界各地の柔道普及・発展に取り組まれ、
国境を越えた支援を展開されています。
私も選手を引退したあとの2010年、
山下先生とともに、
イスラエルとパレスチナを訪問し、
子どもたちを対象に
イスラエル・パレスチナ合同の柔道教室を行いました。
選手時代は、柔道を通じた社会貢献活動について、
あまりピンときていなかった私でしたが、
この柔道教室が、新たな扉を開いてくれました。
柔道の持つ力、スポーツの持つ力を
心から確信できたのです。
両者の間には大変難しい歴史的・宗教的背景がありますが、
子どもたちが笑顔いっぱいで柔道をする姿を見て、
柔道には人と人とをつなぎ、
ひとときであっても、何かを共有する力があると実感しました。
また、海外での社会貢献という意味で言えば、
私の東海大の教え子である
井坪圭佑君の存在もとても大きいです。
井坪君は、大学卒業後の2013年から、
２年間の予定でアフリカのボツワナで
国際協力機構（ＪＩＣＡ）の青年海外協力隊員として
柔道普及と指導に携わっていました。
しかし2014年、南アフリカで不慮の事故により、
亡くなってしまいました。
彼は本当に誠実で心根の優しい人間で、
多くの人に慕われていました。
私自身も、彼のことを尊敬していましたし、
将来は必ずや日本、
そして世界の柔道をけん引する人材として
活躍してくれるだろうと期待していました。
彼が亡くなったことは本当に寂しくて、
悔しくて、悲しいことです。
しかし、彼の思いは、ボツワナで生き続けています。
彼の夢は、指導する選手を五輪に出場させることでしたが、
その教え子たち2人が、見事、
昨年のリオ五輪に出場しました。すごいことです。
また、リオ五輪開幕直前の昨年7月にはボツワナ国内に、
柔道教育ソリダリティーの支援によって新道場も建設されました。
彼の描いた夢は、ボツワナの地で受け継がれているのです。
生前の井坪君のように、
表舞台でその存在はあまり知られていなくても、
地道に活動している人たちが世界中にたくさんいます。
先日、アンバサダーに就任した「HEROs」でも、
私自身の個人的な活動を通じても、
そうした人たちのことを少しでも知っていただき、関心を持ってもらうための
お手伝いをしていきたいと思っています。

Whenever I think about the contribution to society through sports,
the first thing that comes to mind is Yasuhiro Yamashita Sensei's
activities through his company, the NPO-Solidarity of International Judo Education.
Yamashita Sensei and his staff are expanding the popularization
of judo in every part of the world and breaking borders with their aid.
I, too, went with Yamashita Sensei after retiring as an athlete in 2010
to Israel and Palestine and held Israel/Palestine joint judo classes for kids.
When I was an athlete,
I didn't fully understand the concept of contributing to society through judo,
but these judo classes opened a new door for me.
I was convinced of the power that judo and sports actually have.
Both areas have really difficult historical and religious backgrounds,
but as I watched the children doing judo with their smiling faces,
I realized that judo has the power to connect different people and let them share in the moment,
even if only for an instant.
Also, when it comes to contributing to society overseas,
my former student at Tokai University, Keisuke Itsubo, played a big part as well.
Since graduating Tokai University in 2013,
Keisuke became a member of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)
as a Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteer
with the intention of helping popularize and teach judo in Botswana, Africa for 2 years.
However, in 2014, he passed away due to an unforeseen accident in South Africa.
He was a very sincere person with a truly kind disposition who was beloved by many people.
I myself respected him very much and really expected him
to be an important role in the advancement of judo in Japan and even the world.
It was really saddening, heartbreaking, even frustrating when he passed away.
However, his desires and wishes live on in Botswana.
His dream was to have his pupils participate in the Olympics,
and last year at the Rio Olympics, 2 of his pupils did exactly that!
It's truly an impressive feat.
Also, in July, just before the Rio Olympics began,
with the support of the Solidarity of International Judo Education,
a new Dojo was built in Botswana.
His dream has been passed on through Botswana itself.
Just like Keisuke was, there are a great number
of people around the world doing honest work whether they're well noticed for it or not.
I hope to help said people receive more recognition and interest whether
by the work of those recently elected
as "HEROs" ambassadors or through my personal efforts.
