Deutsch Bank Spokesman’s Letterを読む（５）
色々ございまして、ドイツ銀行のAnnual ReportのSpokesman’s Letterを読むことになりました。しばらくお付き合いください。今回は2002 2nd quarterを取り上げます。4～5回かかると思います。
– Focus on core businesses:

■中核ビジネスへの注力
2002年第2四半期には、ドイツ、スペイン、イタリア、ポルトガルにおける保険事業の大半をチューリッヒ・フィナンシャル・サービシズへの売却が完了したほか、セキュリティーズ・サービスとパッシブ運用の両分野では事業戦略の見直しをおこないました。また、データ・センターのアウトソーシングについては複数の企業と交渉を進めております。フランスでは、バンク・ワームス（Banque Worms）の支店ネットワークの一部分である
DB S.A.を売却し、バンク・ワームス事業の完全売却についても交渉を進めております。当グループの戦略的中核ビジネスに含まれない事業や、収益力に問題がある事業については、今後も継続的に売却を検討してまいります。
・exploring strategic alternatives：「事業戦略の見直し」。単語帳にはexplore＝「探検する」という風に書いて覚えましたが、第一義は [transitive] to discuss or think about something carefully：synonym look at。alternativeを「見直し」とするあたりはこなれた見事な訳だ。「戦略的な代替案を議論した結果」などと訳すよりは、よほど垢抜けている。
・ Passive Asset Management：「パッシブ運用」。大文字になっているのでドイツ銀行の商品名。一般にパッシブ運用（passive investment approach）という場合は、投資信託委託会社が採用する手法の一つを指し、具体的には分散投資（diversified investment）を意味する場合が多い。もう一つの手法としては、リサーチに基づいて特定の株や債券に投資するアクティブ運用（active investing approach）がある。
・ in advanced discussions：「交渉を進めております」。事前交渉ということか。うまい訳だ。
・ in negotiations：「交渉中」という意味で用いているなら、negotiationとsなしで不可算名詞扱いのほうが自然な感じがするのだがいかがなものであろうか。inは状態を表している。複数の交渉を同時に進めているということで複数形にしたということか。
・divest：[intransitive and transitive] technical if a company divests, it sells some of its assets, investments etc
・nor deliver sufficient returns：「収益力に問題がある事業」。うまい訳だ。感心している場合ではないが惚れ惚れしてしまう。「十分な利益をもたらさない」でも文意は伝わるのだが、「商品性」としてはいかにも劣る。この辺のトレーニングがまだまだ足らないな。
– Optimization of the PCAM franchise:
PCAM is of strategic importance for us. We are convinced that the performance of this Group Division will improve considerably over the next few years and PCAM will become an important source of high quality earnings to balance and complement the strength of our CIB platform. The acquisition of Scudder and RREEF were completed in the reporting quarter, propelling us into the global bulge bracket of active asset managers. The integration of these acquisitions into our existing Deutsche Asset Management franchise will serve as a catalyst to considerably improve the profitability of this Division. Two other important projects are well underway: the realignment of our business with Private and Business Clients, and the repositioning of our Private Wealth Management franchise. We will report about details in due course.
■個人・資産運用ビジネスの基盤強化
個人・資産運用ビジネスは、当グループの戦略上、重点領域のひとつとなっております。今後数年間で、同ビジネスを大幅に改善し、法人・機関投資家向けビジネスを補完・強化する重要な収益源となると確信しております。2002年第2四半期には、スカダーおよびRREEFの取得を完了し、アクティブ資産運用ビジネスをグローバル規模で推進していく基盤が整いました。今後、ドイチェ・アセット・マネジメントとの統合効果が発揮されるにつれ、個人・資産運用ビジネス全般の収益拡大に大きく貢献すると考えております。その他にも、個人および中小企業顧客ビジネスやプライベート・ウェルス・マネジメント・ビジネスの再配置が進んでおります。進捗状況については、今後、ご報告してまいりたいと考えております。

★the global bulge bracket：「グローバル規模（で推進していく）基盤」。ところでbulge bracket 「バルジブラケット」とは何。

②と③は個人の考えであることに留意すると、米国の証券業界独自の用語のようだ。
“bulge bracket is” で検索にかけると、債券が発行された際に新聞や雑誌に掲載される tombstone advertisement（墓石広告）に関する説明が数多くヒットする。「金融英語の意味と読み方」から引用すると以下のようにある。
広告の様式が墓石に似ていることからこのように呼ばれます。広告には発行債券の概要（金額、期間など）、underwriting groupやselling groupの会社名が列記されます。左側のトップに記載されるのがlead groupです。同じポジションに複数の引受業者が存在するときには、アルファベット順となります。他愛もないことですが、投資銀行家はtombstoneに掲載されるポジションを大変気にします。特にjoint lead managerの場合には左のポジションを得るべくさまざまな駆け引きをすることもあります。
Bulge bracket is a finance term referring to the first group listed on the 'tombstone'. That is, the group of firms in an underwriting syndicate (a group of investment banks) who are responsible for selling the largest amounts of the stock to investors. Their names appear first in the advertisement listing, called the tombstone.

２つの金融機関を吸収合併したことで、「アクティブ資産運用ビジネス」を行う上で重要な「墓石広告」のlead groupの一員になることができた。そのことを「基盤」と訳したと考えれば良さそうだ。
・The integration ・・・ will serve：「統合効果が発揮され」。
・catalyst：something or someone that causes an important change or event to happen：たとえでよく用いられる。They hope his election will act as a catalyst for reform.
