  Am I the only one already missing the long fall weather we had? I'm not anti-winter, but I am anti-grey miserable stormy days. 2 days ago it was 60 degrees, today it's raining slush, in 2 more days it's forcast to be 14. Welcome to Utah.   Woot! Although I swapped the entrance and exit points on accident. I logged in 5 mins after midnight when the campsites went available and half of the #WhiteRimTrail campsites were already booked (including all of the Murphy Hogback sites) . Meaning the prime locations of the White Rim Trail sell faster than a @TaylorSwift concert. Book early if you ever want to go (both the WRT and TaySwift).   I've been wanting to post this one and keep forgetting. I love the snake like roots clinging to the side of the rim of the canyon and wanted to try to get a picture that put the emphasis on them instead of the tree. It's not a sharp drop off but to take the picture it was a very wide angle taken while on my stomach reaching out over the edge to "look back" at the tree. If I dropped the camera it would have tumbled down the hill forever lost to the canyon. But the really awkward part was all the other tourists gawking at me like I was a lunatic lying on my stomach at the edge of the trail.   Most people are aware that Zion canyon only has shuttle service through the upper part of the canyon. What most don't know is that's only during the busy season. So few people go there once the temperature drops the don't realize you can drive all over the place right now. And believe me it's one of the most gorgeous canyon drives you can do!   Digging through old pics. Finding trips I shot but never processed or shared afterwards. Two years ago my sister got us reservations to hike the Subway in Zion. Since it was just an overnighter, the evening before the hike we headed up the canyon to casually wander. It was October 24th and there were amazingly few people in the canyon, aside from a few other hardcore end of season hikers we had the place to ourselves.   Tragic loss! Last night "The Sentinel" a thin gravity defying hoodoo in Bryce Canyon (seen to the left in this pic) finally succumbed to the freezing winter weather and is no more. The parks are always evolving and change is always happening, but it's always a bit sad to see a wonder of nature disappear.   This fall heat wave is really throwing me off. It makes me wish I had spent more time out camping this summer but I keep wondering when the snows are finally going to come for some winter shots. I definitely want to do another trip down to the Redrock when it snows. Something about mixture of red white and blue is just amazing. Plus last time I want to Canyonlands in winter I screwed up my timing leaving late and only had 2 hours there before a storm rolled in and I had to head home. Maybe I'll make use of the Yurts or a Moab hotel for an overnighter this time. Crazy to think that this year I was photographing from almost on top of that butte lit up in the distance.   As a veteran myself I'm going to go against the trend of what you hear today. Don't thank a veteran in words, thank them in your actions. There's alot of animosity on BOTH SIDES right now. Thank the person on the other side for exercising their rights; either the right to vote for president or the right to gather and say they don't like the president. Veterans don't make sacrifices for symbols or political parties. They make their sacrifice for those rights and freedoms we've been exercising in the last week. Use those freedoms to unite the country and make it better; not to divide the country and spread hatred and animosity. Both sides have valid views and concerns.   The gaggle of Photographers on the rim during sunset. Personally I like to wander and get different perspectives and subjects as the evening falls but if you like to camp in one spot make sure you get there early. Also play nice. Some people get a little edgy if they feel you're screwing up their "perfect shot". Remember the view is there to be enjoyed, so enjoy it!   The Silent City in Bryce is amazing because it overwhelms your senses, there are so many spires packed into the area your eyes can take it in at once. The one indian story is that a group of the Legend People, the To-when-an-ung-wa, were greedy eating and drinking all the resources in the area. So Coyote tricked them by offing a massive banquet with all the food they could eat. They all came faces painted and dressed in their finest colorful clothes. Then Coyote sprung his trap and started turning them to stone. The group fled trying to run up over the rim and got stuck trying to climb out where they all frozen as a group.   Last of the day on the rim of Bryce Canyon. Because the amphitheater faces east sunset basically means everything below you is going to be in harsh shadow. It's a bit difficult to photograph without blown out horizons or under exposed HooDoos. Better to start an hour earlier than you usually would when the sun still has enough altitude to shine over the rim.   Awwwww!!! You can see why they have to put up signs saying don't pet the wildlife. They're just so darn cute. And this guy let me get within about 8ft of him. Of course if I had tried to pet him he's have probably sunk those sharp teeth into my soft fleshy finger, given me rabies, and I'd be dead now... But so cute! After the sun went down and started to fade from the higher distant clouds the pastel colors of the clouds started to match the pastel colors of the HooDoos in the amphitheater.   I noticed this couple before they even sat down because of their matching shirts. Newlyweds on honeymoon maybe? She very carefully posed herself casually sitting on the bench while he took a picture. Then she had to make sure it was good enough. This process repeated THREE times before she was satisfied and she took her phone back from him. It is my belief that ZERO instagram pictures of boyfriend/girlfriends are spontaneous.
