  The same year the USA began it's independence from Great Britain the Dominguez Escalante expedition passed through here exploring Spain (later Mexico's) land holdings much the same way Lewis and Clark would explore the USA's new territory a quarter century later. Strange to think that in the chain of "ownership" for Utah it's: Indian>Mexico>USA>Mormons>Statehood. This marker just off the freeway at Scipio Pass Utah near the DQ where everybody on road trips gets a shake (Sorry Scipio, that's all anybody does there). The Dominguez Escalante expedition was looking for a trail from Santa Fe NM to Monterey CA. The fact that they came this far north is a testament to how broken and rugged the terrain of Southern Utah and Arizona, all thanks to the Colorado river and its tributaries.   Road into the desert... The setting sun over the lava fields at the edge of the Great Basin. The mountains in the distance are the Cricket Mountains... Which I know nothing about, they're in one of the "dead zones" of the area that I've never explored. I'll need to change that.   When this volcano erupted from the bottom of Lake Bonneville it literally exploded up creating a jagged rim around the caldera. The rim was high enough to keep water from spilling in and the lava created a small atoll like island in the middle of the lake.   This is the picture taken directly above the underground pic I posted a few days ago. It's hard to get a sense of how far down the floor is (20-30ft from the rim) . But you can see why all of these lava tubes go un-noticed as you cruise down the interstate. From the surface everything is so flat.   Looking into the remnant caldera of the volcano "Tabernacle Crater". When lake Bonneville was in it's lower later stages around 13000 years ago this volcano exploded out from underneath creating a growing volcanic island with water lapping at the broken edge of the volcano. The idea of a volcanic island forming in the middle of Utah's inland sea is crazy to me. More crazy is that the most recent volcanic activity in the area is only about 600 years old. In other-words Indians may have watched volcanoes erupt in the heart of utah. And it's technically still active.   This gives a sense of scale of how big the lava tubes are. I'm 6'3". The rocks in back are the size of mini-buses. It's cool to visit when from the freeway it looks like flat boring hills you pass as you're rushing down to southern Utah.   The collapse roof of a lava tube creates a natural atrium. Utah has a surprisingly recent volcanic past, and in the flatlands west of I-15 driving past Fillmore you can see the remnants of that past.   Sunrise on the Bears Ears. This is from Natural Bridges just north-west of the peaks on the loop trail. The flat "Pygmy Forest" land is deceptive because looking out across it seems to be just flat but you're standing on solid mesa tops with deep canyons carved down through the sandstone. Just a few hundred feet from this shot is a deep chasm that holds Sipapu Bridge, the 4th largest natural rock arch in the world.   Sorry snowbirds, I'm just more of a summer person. I'm wishing the warm weather was here again. The 3000-4000 year old Pictographs in Thompson canyon lie right next to the old rail line from it's mining days in the lat 19th century.   Another Bears Ears pic. Not my best since I was just passing though, but this is looking out over the Valley of the Gods from Moki Dugway. Just driving though I stared out promising I need to go back there for a serious photography trip. Whovians might remember the area more as the place Amy Pond was "shot and killed" in the Impossible Astronaut episodes.   I was looking to see what photos I have from Utah's newest National Monument. I've driven past that area twice as part of a bigger southern Utah trip. First time was before the big hype about the Bears Ears started and I was thinking "This place is amazing! I definitely need to make it back down here!" Here's a portion of Comb Ridge, it rises like a 42 mile long wall. Kind of like a sandstone version of the Northern Wall in Game of Thrones.   A shoe-tree in Skull Valley, around the Big Springs stop of the Hastings Trail and Donner Party path. I've been thinking next year of retracing the whole path of the Hastings Cutoff and putting a video of the the journey on youtube. Much of it is offroad and some places like the salt flats impassible to vehicles. But I think it would be cool to experience what they saw as they crossed the country.   Looking south-west around Timpie Point in the Utah west desert. Trappers Jedidiah Smith and John C Fremont rounded this area often in their travels but most famous is probably the Donner Party. This was pretty much the last area with decent water and vegetation before they got bogged down in the salt flats. I can imagine them standing at this very point scouting their next move with no idea how bad things were about to get in the next 48 hours.   My trip up highway 89 wasn't meant to be so religion-centric but looking thorough my photos it really turned out that way. But you don't have to be believer to appreciate the interesting classic architecture of the old religious buildings. And we don't have the long western history of Europe so this stuff is like the USA's version of old cathedrals. The Logan Temple was the 4th built by the LDS church, the 2nd oldest still in operation (1 was burned, the other is run by a splitnter group of LDS). It predates the classic temple in Salt Lake City by a few years and as such doesn't have the gold angel Moroni that is standard on top of all the temples since.
