The same year the USA began it's independence...
The same year the USA began it's independence from Great Britain the Dominguez Escalante expedition passed through here exploring Spain (later Mexico's) land holdings much the same way Lewis and Clark would explore the USA's new territory a quarter century later. Strange to think that in the chain of "ownership" for Utah it's: Indian>Mexico>USA>Mormons>Statehood. This marker just off the freeway at Scipio Pass Utah near the DQ where everybody on road trips gets a shake (Sorry Scipio, that's all anybody does there). The Dominguez Escalante expedition was looking for a trail from Santa Fe NM to Monterey CA. The fact that they came this far north is a testament to how broken and rugged the terrain of Southern Utah and Arizona, all thanks to the Colorado river and its tributaries.
