Hello, my name is Kenji Ota. I am in charge of Primary education. Today, I am going to talk about my activity by last august, the second term of primary schools.
First, try to answer those questions. How long do you need to finish? Or how many marks can you get? ・・・ Have you finished? This is what I have carried every week to improve students’ basic calculation ability. I call it calculation test. The contents of the tests are easy twenty questions with one digit numbers. Addition and subtraction tests are done within 3minutes, Multiplication and division are done within 8 minutes.
This is the result of term2. These graphs show the average scores. Light color ones are the result of may, and dark color ones are July. We can see the score of Multiplication and division got very well. Same as average score, average time to finish the test got well, too.
On May, the students needed 5:56 on average, but just 4:24 on July. Like this, the students’ basic calculation ability was very much improved.
Why did it occur? I think it’s because I have carried the activity named “Master of multiplication”.
On multiplication, the students said like “two times two equals four” but this is too long to memorize. So on this activity, I removed “times” and “equals” like ”two two four”, like Japanese “Kuku. Then it got a good rhythm and the students have really enjoyed to say it in the rhythm. And I also made the certificate of “Master of Multiplication”. When the students memorize all the multiplication tables, I give it to them. The students want the certificate, so they have tried hard to memorize the multiplication table.
I have carried these activities for P4 and P5 students in my place of assignment, Ndejje junior school. There are about 800 students, and 25 teachers. And as I said, I am in charge of P4 and 5 Mathematics. About 200 students have been working on my activities.
I was talking about my first objective, To improve students’ calculation ability. And I ‘ve set two more objectives. The second one is to improve teachers’ lesson skills. And the third one is to contribute to SDG4. SDG4 is about “Quality education” including culture interaction for sustainable development and diversity.
For the second objective,I have made and distribute newsletters named “Japanese Teaching Methods”. I have made it twice a month. On it, I have shown many Japanese teaching methods like These. Especially Time pressure and Hour glass were used by many local teachers.
This is Hour Glass. I connected two plastic bottles and made a small hole between them, so the water can frow form the top side to the bottom side. Using this, we can check time limit visually. It is very useful for especially the small students. And of course we can easily get prastic botttles in anywhere. So it is easy to make.
In addition, I set up a study group for JICA volunteers involved in education, to learn teaching and supporting methods. I set up this group with my co-volunteers, Miss N.... and Miss M..... Without their support, I wouldn’t have set it up. I am very thankful to them. The first lesson study event was held at my school. We held a review meeting and discussed about my lesson. It was a great learning opportunity. I believe that this event or this group improve the lesson skills of volunteers and even local teachers.
These are the activities for the second objective. Now, let me talk about the last objective, To contribute to SDG4. For this objective, I have carried online culture exchange classes. But we didn’t have enough time to prepare or practice, so I thought those classes were just fun time, not learning or effective cultural exchange time. But the students seemed to enjoy the classes. These are the comment from the students. They wrote like “I think that class is good. I want to get friends in Japan”.
And for Japanese students, I have sent School letters called “Ugandayori. I have made 20 letters so far. Over 10 schools have used this letter and introduce Ugandan culture to the Japanese students. I have heard many students are interested in Uganda. On this letter, I have put an article about Japanese people in Uganda. I have asked my co-volunteers, a volunteer coordinator and other people in Uganda to write the article. Thanks to them, the articles have gotten good reputation among Japanese schools.
In addition, to contribute to SDG4, I mean Quality education, I donated a library and English books to a school for poor single mothers and their children, by using the Small Heart Project. This is out of my assignment from Ndejje Junior school, but I think this is so important mission for me. There were many troubles like weeken yen problem and inflation, or that I couldn’t contact with a builder for a long time. But I managed to finish this project. After I go back to Ndejje, I will go there and carry some activities like reading books to the children.
These are my activities by August. To achieve these objectives, I will continue to do my best. It is all of my report today. Thank you for your listening and cooperation for my activities.
