2008年6月19日午前２時。
山口冨士夫さんが、「チキンシャック」のバーカウンターに備えられている文字盤が裏返し仕様の時計を見遣って呟いた。
「ノゾムくん、俺、まだここにいて良いのかな？」
「まだまだ、夜はこれからだから、全然大丈夫だよ」
冨士夫さんは、ノゾムさんにテキーラのショットを2杯頼み、俺たちは乾杯した。
ショットグラスを乾した冨士夫さんは、俺に向き直った。
「清志郎はどうしちゃったのかな？」
「最近、武道館で復活ライヴをやったみたいですね」
「そうじゃなくて、今の清志郎がやっていること、書いている曲のことだよ。自転車に乗っているのは良いんだけどさ、フジ・ロックに出演するときにステージに自転車を漕いで現れて、『苗場まで自転車で来ました！』なんてさ......ああいう演出は好きじゃないね。彼もオーティス・レディングが好きなら、本当の自分をさらけ出す曲を作ればいいのにと思うよ。世界は日本のロックを待っているんだよ。もう10年くらい前からそうさ。なのに、誰もいないんだもん。ウルフルズにしたってどうよ？まあ、『ガッツだぜ』はあのKC & ザ・サンシャイン・バンドの『That’s the way』のもじりで、その彼らのセンスは買うけどね」
冨士夫さんは、俺の目を見据えて話し続ける。相手の本質を見透かすような、シャープでワイルドな目つき。『お前はホンモノなのか？』と問いかけられているような気がして、俺も物怖じせず、冨士夫さんの双眸を覗き返した。グラスを重ねるうちに、冨士夫さんの話は、80年代の出来事に移行し始めた。
「フールズは好きかい？ヴォーカルの伊藤耕は凄いぜ。それとサイドギターの青ちゃん、青木真一だよ。それから、川田良...川田良は知ってるよね？凄いギタリストだぜ」
「青木真一さんは、村八分のオリジナルメンバーですね？あの村八分の評伝本の表紙写真は、風月堂の前で撮ったんですよね？」
「あの写真撮影のとき.....あのときは、もうブッちぎれそうだった。バンド内のテンションが凄くてね」
「あの写真にはオリジナルメンバーが写っているんですか？」
「あれはオリジナルメンバーじゃないよ、最初はギターに染谷青さんがいてさ......染谷さんは凄かったよ、延々ブルースを弾き続けるんだもん......そのあと二代目ドラマーとして上原ユカリが加入してさ。最初にいたドラマーをチャー坊がぶっ飛ばして...本当に凄い勢いでぶっ飛ばしてた......彼はひどいことを言っていたからね。流産したチャー坊の彼女に「また産めば良いじゃない」なんて...まあ、そうなのかもしれないけどね。それにしても女を殴っちゃだめだよね。でも男に一回も殴られたことがない女もだめだね」
カウンターの片隅で話し込んでいる俺と冨士夫さんの脇を、背の高いセクシーな女性が通り過ぎて行った。
「今年の7月にストーンズのファンクラブ主催のストーンズ・トリビュート・イヴェントがあるらしくて、俺も出演を誘われているんだけど.....ローリング・ストーンズのファンクラブ会長が、キースを呼ぼうとしているらしいよ。それで、キースさんのギャラは、ワンステージ6000万円だってさ。ミックさんを呼ぼうとすれば、7000万円かかるみたいだよ」
「それは凄いですね」
「その関係で、ファンクラブを通してキースさんから、俺宛にメッセージをもらったんだ。『ベガーズ・バンケットを忘れんじゃねえぞ！』ってね」
「へぇー、それも凄いなあ！」
「でもさぁ、俺としては、キースさんとは、そういうイベントなんかじゃなくて、どっかの部屋か飲み屋で鮎川誠さんを交えて、セッションをやりたいね。それで、お互いのことを確かめ合うんだ」
「ここ、『チキンシャック』で3人のセッションが実現出来たら最高ですね！」
冨士夫さんにとって、ローリング・ストーンズ、そのなかでもキース・リチャーズは別格の存在なのだろう。世間一般のイメージでは、冨士夫さんはキースから絶大な影響を受けているということが定説となっている。確かにその通りかもしれない。しかし、こうして間近で冨士夫さんと相対しているうちに、俺はこう考え始めた。
「彼の最大のヒーローはキースではなく、実はチャック・ベリーなのかもしれない」
時刻が午前3時を回っても、冨士夫さんと俺とのロック夜話の話題は尽きることがなさそうだった。
「ロックンロールのカッコいいリフ、俺が演りたいと思ってたリフは、みんなキースさんに先に演られちゃったね」
「『ギミー・シェルター』とか......」
「そうだね、それから、アニマルズも好きだね。あのベースギターのチャス・チャンドラー、ジミのマネージャーだったひとだね...あのひとのベースはレゲエのフィーリングがあるね。何だっけあの曲は？ダンダンダダダダーンっていうリフの...『イッツ・マイ・ライフ』じゃなくて…『孤独の叫び』か！あれ、良いよね！」
「『ホエン・アイ・ワズ・ヤング』も良いですよね？凄くサイケデリックで」
「ああ、『ホエン・アイ・ワズ・ヤング』ね！あの曲、ダイナマイツのライヴでも演ったなあ。あとは『モンタレー』とかさ.....エリック・バードンはカッコいいよね。俺、アニマルズの最初の来日公演を観に行ったんだけど、前座がスパイダーズでさ...スパイダーズは、アニマルズのレパートリーの『ブーン・ブーン』を先に演っちゃったんだ！」
「あれは、ジョン・リー・フッカーの曲ですね」
「あのタイトルは、『俺は、お前を虜にする』ってことだね。あの頃、他に観たイギリスのバンドは......そう、ハニカムズを観に行ったときは俺らの方が演奏が上手いと思ったね」
そして話題はビートルズのことになった。
「俺、ビートルズの日本公演はテレビで観たんだけど、リンゴ・スターは機嫌悪そうだったね、『ツアーなんて、もう、まっぴらだ、ドラムの腕前が落ちるから』って感じでね。でもビートルズは凄く上手いバンドだったと思うよ。俺、ビートルズはあの『マジカル・ミステリー・ツアー』がリリースされたときに聴かなくなっちゃった。『フール・オン・ザ・ヒル』が嫌いでさ。でも、その後の『ホワイトアルバム』、『アビィ・ロード』は素晴らしいと思ったよ」
世代の差はあれど、冨士夫さんと俺の音楽的なルーツは一緒だった。リズム＆ブルース、アメリカン・ポップス、ブリティッシュ・ビート、アメリカ西海岸のフォーク・ロック/サイケデリック・ロック、ビートルズ、ストーンズ、キンクス、フー、ジミ・ヘンドリクス、ステッペン・ウルフ、モビー・グレイプ、ラヴィン・スプーンフル、バーズ......。
「バーズはいいよね、あのギターのひと、ロジャー・マッギンだけが注目されていたみたいだけど...俺、バーズのベースの人と友達だったんだ。一緒に米軍基地のクラブを回っていてさ、しばらくして、彼は「俺、バーズに入っちゃったよ」って言っていたよ。バーズは途中でベースが変わっているはずだよ、俺たちは彼のことを、ビルって呼んでいたけどね」
バーズに在籍していた歴代ベーシストは3人いるが、ビルという名前のメンバーはいない。いずれにしろ、もはや遠い昔のことだ。それに、一夜限りのステージにそのビルというベーシストが参加していなかったとは言い切れない。
「バーズのトレードマークのリッケンバッカーの12弦ギターは良いよね。あのギターを初めて弾いたときは、物凄く感動したね！」
「良いですよねリッケンバッカーは。僕もリッケンバッカー480を一台持っていました。ところで、冨士夫さんはジョニー・サンダーズと一緒に演ったことがありましたよね？」
「ジョニーね...凄く辛そうだったよ。彼と共演したときは、『Do you love me』とかを演ったんだ！ニューヨーク・ドールズにいたときのジョニーは、ニューヨーク発のグラム・ロッカーを演じていたんだね」
時刻は午前4時になり、バーコーナーにいるのは、冨士夫さんと俺だけになっていた。俺たちの話を聞くともなく聞いていたノゾムさんがカウンターを出て、PAブースに向かい、ほどなく店内にはポール・ウェラーの『ヘヴィ・ソウル』が流れ出した。
「俺、アンディ・ウォーホルが好きだなあ。アンディの周りにいたミュージシャン達もね。ヴェルヴェット・アンダーグラウンドも好きだし、デヴィッド・ボウイもいいよね」
「良いですよね、ルー・リードもボウイも......ところで、冨士夫さん、ストリート・スライダーズは好きでしたか？」
「スライダーズかあ...ドラムに関しては「どうかなあ？」って思ったけど、ハリーと蘭丸は好きだったよ...うん、スライダーズは好きだったよ！」
「冨士夫さんの自叙伝に『ルーツ・ミュージックを外すんじゃねえぞ』って書いてありましたね」
「そりゃ、そうだよ、それは当然だよ」
「『俺は一生、村八分を生きるんだ』とも書いてありました」
「そうだよ、その通りだよ......世界は日本のバンドを待っているんだよ。ギターウルフとかは、アメリカやヨーロッパをツアーしていたね、ああいうやり方も良いかもね。世界は日本のロックを待っている......でも誰もいないんだもんな......まあ、いいさ、俺がやるんだから」
冨士夫さんは、他にも色々なことを話してくれた。裸のラリーズを辞めたときが人生の転機だったこと、ソロアルバム『アトモスフィア』のレコーディング時のハプニング（「ドラムの大口広司さんは凄かったよ！」）、歴史観、世界観、彼の生い立ちに関する省察、母への思い、それから......。
何杯目かのグラスの酒を乾した冨士夫さんが、カウンターに立つノゾムさんに笑いかけてこう言った。
「いやあ、今日は楽しいよ！だって、このひと、何でも知っているんだもん！」
時刻は5時を回り、冨士夫さんはトイレに行き、ノゾムさんが閉店の準備を始めた。俺が席を立って、ジーンズのポケットから財布を取り出していると、冨士夫さんがトイレから戻って来た。彼は再び鋭い目つきになり、俺を見据えた。
「俺、まだ、あんたの名前を教えてもらっていないんだけどな......でも俺、すぐ人の名前を忘れちゃうんだけど」
「僕は、コダマっていいます。コダマケイイチです」
「そうかー、じゃあ、児玉誉士夫って覚えておくよ。仕事は何しているの？」
「今は...英文事務や翻訳をしていますが、僕は、物書きになりたいんです」
「そうかぁ、物書きになりたいんだね！楽器は演奏しないの？」
「僕はDJなんです」
「そうか、DJなんだね」
「冨士夫さん、握手してください」
差し出された冨士夫さんの手は、がっしりとしていたが、同時にとても繊細な感触があった。幾多の苦難を乗り越えて来たソウル・サバイバーの手だった。
彼の右手を握りながら、俺は、「きっとキース・リチャーズも、こういう手をしているんだろうな」と思った。

Fujio Yamaguchi muttered to Nozomu while looking at the clock with the reversed dial on the bar counter of "Chicken Shack".
"Nozomu, can I still be here?"
Nozomu said, "Night time passes slowly, so it's okay."
And Fujio asked Nozomu for two glasses of tequila and then Fujio and me were toasted.
After drinking a shot of tequila, Fujio turned to face me.
"I wonder what happened to Kiyoshiro Imawano?"
“It looks like he did a comeback show at the Budokan”
"No, I'm talking about what Kiyoshiro is doing now and the songs he's been writing in recent years. It's good that he's on a bike, but when he was on stage at Fuji Rock, he was on a bicycle. And he paddled onto the stage and was like, 'I came to Naeba by bicycle!'... I don't like that kind of presentation. I think he should make a song that reveals his true feelings.The world is waiting for Japanese rock. The world has been waiting for us for ten years. But no one has made it happen. What about Ulfuls? Well, they are not bad and their hit tune called "Guts daze" is a parody of that KC & Sunshine band's "That's the way", and I appreciate their taste."
Fujio continues to speak while keeping his eyes fixed on me. A sharp and wild look that seems to see through the essence of the listener. I felt like he was asking me, "Do you have a pure soul?" So I looked back into Fujio's eyes without hesitation. And when with drink refill, Fujio's story began to shift to events in the 1980s.
"Do you like The Fools? Ko Ito, the vocalist, is amazing. And Shinichi Aoki, also known as Ao-chan, is the side guitarist. And Ryo Kawata...you know Ryo Kawata, right? He's an amazing guitarist."
“Shinichi Aoki is an original member of Murahachibu, right? By the way, the cover photo of that Murahachibu biography was taken in front of the rock cafe Fugetsudo in Shinjuku, right?”
“At the time of the photo shoot...at that time, I felt like I was going to be torn apart. Since it was a time when the tension within the band was at its peak."
"Are the original members in that picture?"
"That's not the original members, at first there was Sei Someya on guitar...Someya was amazing, he kept playing the blues... and then Yukari Uehara, the new drummer were join in our band. Char-Bo was beating the first drummer really hard...because he said terrible things to Char-Bo and his girlfriend. The first drummer said of Char-Bo's girlfriend who had a miscarriage: "Your next baby will be born soon, so don't worry about it."
That may be true, though. Anyway, a man shouldn't hit a woman. But I think a woman who has never been hit by a man is no good either."
A tall sexy woman passed by us as we chatted in the corner of the counter.
“I heard that there will be Rolling Stones tribute event hosted by the Rolling Stones fan club in July of this year, and I have been invited to perform as well. It seems that the Rolling Stones' Japanese fan club president is trying to invite Keith. And Keith Richards' fee is 60 million yen per just one gig. If the fan club president were to invite Mick Jagger, it would cost 70 million yen."
"That's ridiculous."
"So I received a message from Keith through the Rolling Stones fan club in Japan. Keith said to me, 'Don't forget about Beggar's Banquet! ’”
"Hey, that's amazing!"
“But for me, I want to have a session with Keith, not at that kind of event, but with Keith and Makoto Ayukawa and me in somewhere room or bar. To confirm each other's true nature"
"It would be great if the three of you could have a session here at 'Chicken Shack'!"
For Fujio, Rolling Stones, especially Keith Richards, are special hero. The general public image is that Fujio was greatly influenced from Keith. That may be true. However, while facing Fujio up close like this, I began to think like this.
"Fujio's biggest hero are may not actually be Keith, but Chuck Berry"
Even after 3:00 AM, we were still talking about rock and roll.
“All the riffs I wanted to play in rock and roll, Keith did them before me.”
"'Gimme Shelter' or something..."
"Yeah, I also like The Animals. That bass guitarist, Chas Chandler, who was Jimi's manager...his bass play has a reggae feel to it. What the hell is that song? Not "It's My Life", but "Inside Lookin' Out"! That's good! ”
"'When I was young' is also good. It's a very psychedelic song."
"Oh, 'when I was young'! The Dynamites played that song. And 'Monterey'...Eric Burdon is cool. And I went to see The Animals' gig for the first time in Japan, and the opening act was The Spiders...They played "Boom Boom" from The Animals' repertoire before The Animals show! ”
"That's a John Lee Hooker song."
"That title is means 'I will make you captive'. And talking about another British band I saw back then. Yes, when I went to see The Honeycombs, I thought The Dynamites could play better than them.
Then the topic turned to The Beatles.
“I saw The Beatles show in Japan on TV, and Ringo Starr was in a bad mood, just like, he means 'I can't go on tour anymore, I'm going to be a bad drummer.' But I think The Beatles were a very good band.
I stopped listening to them when "Magical Mystery Tour" came out. I hate "Fool on the Hill". But then 'White Album' and 'Abbey Road' were great."
Despite the generational difference, I found that Fujio and I share almost the same musical roots. R&B, American pops, British beat bands, US west coast folk/psychedelic rock, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, The Who, Jimi Hendrix, Steppen Wolf, Moby Grape, Lovin' Spoonful, The Byrds......and many more.
"The Byrds are great band, but that guitar guy, Roger McGuinn, seemed to be the only thing that got attention... I was friends with the Byrds bassman. We were touring US military bases club together, and after a while he said, 'I'm in the Byrds'. Byrds must have changed bass halfway through, we used to call him Bill."
There are three bassists who have been in the Byrds, but there is no bassist named Bill. Either way, that was a long time ago. As long as it's one night stand, it's hard to say that Bill wasn't playing bass guitar with The Byrds.
"The Byrds' trademark Rickenbacker 12-string guitar is great. The first time I played that guitar, I was blown away!"
"Rickenbackers are great. I had one. By the way, have you ever played with Johnny Thunders?"
"Johnny...he looked so tired and exhausted. When we played together, we played 'Do you love me' and other oldies tunes! When he was with the New York Dolls, Johnny was acting like a glam rocker from New York. Since he needed gave many people what they want"
It was 4:00 in the morning, and Fujio and I were the only people in the bar corner. Nozomu, who secretly listened to our conversation, left the counter and headed for the PA booth. Soon after, Paul Weller's "Heavy Soul" started playing.
“I like Andy Warhol. And the musicians who were around Andy.I like the Velvet Underground.I like David Bowie.”
"Good, I love Lou Reed and David Bowie...By the way, Fujio, did you like The Street Sliders?"
"Street Sliders...I was not sure if the drummer fitted the band or not, but I liked Harry and Ranmaru...Yeah, I liked the Street Sliders!"
"In your autobiography, you said, 'Don't forget about roots music.'"
"Well, yes, of course it is."
"You also wrote that 'I will live my rest of life while maintaining the spirit of the band called 'Murahachibu'."
"Yeah, that's right...the world is waiting for Japanese bands. Guitar Wolf and others are touring America and Europe. I think it's good idea that they do it that way. The world is waiting for Japanese rock...but no one has made it happen...well, it's okay, I'll do it."
Fujio told me about many other things. For example, when he left Les Rallizes Denudes, it was a turning point in his life. And drama of during the recording of his solo album Atmosphere. And his historical view of the world, consideration of his birth. And thoughts on his mother, and many more.
After finishing his drink, Fujio smiled at Nozomu at the counter and said,
"Well, today is fun day! Because this guy knows everything!"
It was around 5:00 in the morning, Fujio went to the restroom, and Nozomu started preparing to close.
As I stood up and took my wallet out of my jeans pocket, Fujio came back from the restroom. And he looked at me again with sharp eyes.
"I don't know your name yet...but I forget people's names very quickly."
"My name is Keiichi Kodama."
"Well, then I'll remember you as that famous politician Yoshio Kodama. What do you do?"
"Right now...I'm doing English clerical work and translating, but I want to be a writer."
"Well, you want to be a writer! Don't you play guitar or other instrument?"
"I'm a DJ"
"Okay, you're a DJ."
"Fujio-san, please shake my hand."
The touch of Fujio's right hand felt rough, but at the same time it felt very delicate.
It was the hand of a Soul Survivor who had overcome many hardships. I shook his hand and I thought, 'Keith Richards must have hands like this too'
