◆Tokyo -The City of Glass-Synopsis

Toru is a graduate student who runs a bar in Shinjuku Ni-chome, one of the biggest gay districts in the world. One day, he meets a Korean man named Yong and falls in love.
This seemingly ordinary event is somehow connected with a 20-year-old homicide case, and Confessions of a Mask by Yukio Mishima is the key connecting them. Toru’s life takes an unexpected turn when a detective named Wakayama who is investigating a disappearance around Toru runs into two people. The first is Toru’s professor Haruko Akagi, the other is Yusuke Honma, the lover of Haruko Suda’s son, the victim in the old murder case. What is sex? What is love? This story paints a portrait of the true nature of pitiful characters living in the lights and shadows of Tokyo.

◆Director’s statement from Kazuhiro Teranishi

Tokyo is a global center for information, people, and interests. While there are many different kinds of people gathered in Tokyo, I have chosen to focus on young men and their ever-shifting values. I have done my best to make an honest depiction of the men who influence men’s fashion, sexuality, romance, values and work. I also introduce Yukio Mishima’s novel Confessions of a Mask, a novel that made a huge impact on Japanese literature. Many gay, bisexual and transsexual men live in Tokyo and the rest of Japan, and this population is bound to increase. What do they think and feel? How did their thoughts and feelings come about, and how will they change Tokyo and the world? I try to express the love I see there, and paint a portrait of Japan’s future.
