LA Auto Show 2011: Fiat 500 Abarth in US production trim
Like much of Italy's economy, the Fiat 500 has suffered a lackluster year, with Americans buying less than half of the Cinquecentos Fiat expected to sell and a Jennifer Lopez ad testing the proposition that all publicity is good publicity.
Here's the reinforcement arriving: the 160-hp turbo Abarth.
The 500 isn't a bad small car, but it's probably a bit too cute to ever be a mainstream vehicle.
The Abarth version goes some distance toward putting a scorpion on the 500's face, with a tighter, lowered suspension and upgraded brakes, steering and wheels.
It has aluminum racing wheels, a heavy-duty five-speed manual transmission, a spoiler and a racing stripe at the bottom of the door. The Abarth gets to dealers in the first half of 2012.

Pink Martini and Saori Yuki
The Brazilian classic Mas Que Nada sung by Saori Yuki. And it is Saori Yuki who is the protagonist of Pink Martini's 2nd album of 2011: 1969, which will be released on 1st November.
Saori Yuki, real name Yasuda Akiko, is a real "vedette" in Japan (she's known as the "Japanese Barbara Streisand"), and is famous for both her musical work and her acting and television presenting roles.
Yuki started her career in 1969 and this album of the same name from Pink Martini is a tribute to the hits of that year.
Shoppers complain about M&S handbag that ‘smells of fish’
Marks and Spencer has caused a stink by selling handbags that apparently smell of fish.
The £25 shoulder bag has been returned by several customers who could not get rid of the strong odour, while others took to the store's website to complain.
Caroline Smith bought one in red as a 77th birthday present for her mum – but she says her mum is too embarrassed to use it because of its fishy smell.
Caroline said: “It’s a really horrible smell as if she’s carrying around some smoked mackerel.
“Mum’s tried everything. She’s filled it with perfumed tissues and hung it out to air, but nothing works.”
Her mum felt uncomfortable about returning the whiffy accessory, so Caroline took it back to the store for her.
Customers have also complained of others that smell unpleasant inside.
An M&S spokesman confirmed that some customers had returned the shoulder bag due to its smell.
But he insisted that it was a popular product with “extremely low rates of return” and that only a small fraction of consumers had asked for a refund.
